One of the first guides of its kind, Hidden Hawaii helped launch a generation of travel books devoted to adventure tourism.

Emphasizing budget travel and eco-tourism, Hidden Hawaii turns around the adage that "you get what you pay for". Spend hundreds of dollars per night at a hotel where everything is manufactured for your enjoyment, and your trip will feel artificial and contrived. One of the first guides of its kind, Hidden Hawaii helped launch a generation of travel books devoted to adventure tourism. The Honolulu Advertiser has called this book "a bible", and it has sold morethan 300,000 copies over the years.

Hidden Hawaii : The Adventurer's Guide. Hidden Hawaii not only describes the major hotel chains in Hawaii, but some of the smaller hotels and bed and breakfasts. It also contains green and white maps broken down by particular regions and various coastlines, which will help tourists orient themselves. Some of the maps outline streets, and many of them are dotted with attractions.

Several people who lived in Hawaii recommended this book. It definitely has a better "local" flavor and advice regarding both major attractions lesser known places, facilities, etc. than all of the current Hawaii travel advice books. The one failure is that Hidden Hawaii is dated and needs to be brought current.

Ray Riegert lives in Berkeley, California. As an annual visitor to the Garden Island, I own many Kauai travel and hiking guides. I loved Reigart's Hidden Hawaii book from the mid-90's and was excited to get this updated (12-08) island specific book before our 03-09 trip. This is one book I'll bring on my next visit. It's still good, well written, and provides a compact overview of the island, history and key spots to see, stay and eat. Reigart has delegated the updates to another writer who lives on Kauai.

Good restaurants, quaint shops, and swinging hot spots come and go. This book directs you to the more permanent natural places that might not be on the agenda of your tour guide. Hidden beaches, hiking trails, coral reefs, remote villages, secluded mountain valleys, and yes, the volcanoes are all listed here with unique ways to get there the average non-islander probably does not know!
