After the second World War the winning countries seriously stepped up intelligence collection on one another and emerging Middle Eastern growing powers as the World looked for a new power order. Triple is about this spying Spider-web of spies that began at that time. Only Ken Follett could keep all these characters straight for the reader and still create a masterpiece with a real love story that is intertwined within the story ( not just s Bond girl); and a multidimensional hero.

I enjoyed this book in many ways, although it tended to be a bit wordy. But, with a bit of fastforwarding it was exciting and had more than a few twists and turns. Mr. Follett manages to bring the complexity of the Middle East, and the dangers of trying to maneuver through its political and theological landscape, to the written pages of this novel. Interestingly he is able to make a ruthless assassin somewhat likable, and illuminates a world where people matter far less than politics, revenge and hate.

The main focus of the book is a race to nuclear weapons between Israel and islamists in Egypt. With a creative Mossad agent, some luck, assistance from friends, and old debts called in, the Israeli's are well on their way to hijacking a shipment of nuclear fuel. A chance encounter blows the cover of the Mossad agent, and the story becomes a race of time and trial of wits. A twist is thrown in here which I won't disclose, but it adds intrigue and intensity to the story. It also explains the title, which puzzled me until that point.

The story is told from the perspective of the Israelis, but it is not without balance, and it clearly shows the politics and background of many of the issues we faced then, and now, in that volatile part of the world. The only real weakness of the book was the final showdown which was somewhat improbable, but the rest of the book was full of intrigue, suspense, cleverness and plain good storytelling and it easily overcame the one small weakness of the end.

Overall a good read that entertained. I don't know that I would argue real hard that the premise was fully believable or the characters deeply developed but they were both complete enough to make the book fun to read and did not distract overly from the story. While I could argue, on the one hand, that the hero was a bit too infallible, I would then argue that this is, after all, a novel and not a biography. I tend to read mostly non-fiction, and then after some time, just need something a little lighter and fun to take a break from actually having to attend to what I am reading. This fit the bill for me and I have enjoyed several of Follett's other books also. Character development and involvement were not nearly what I experienced in his Pillars of the Earth, but there was also only about a quarter of the pages and time involved also. Happy ending was fine for me since I expected it would be so, though as with most novels I have read over the last several years, I was a little empty with what seemed a simple wrap-up like, they all lived happily ever after.

Ken Follett takes the reader back to the days before fast information was available online. Back to the days of when Isreal was a new nation and the problems she faced with her neighbors. A spy story that will keep you reading into the night. Dickstein, from the Mossad, Col. Rustov, KGB, Cortone, Mafia from the USA. Suz, a young and beautiful woman of mixed heritage. Hassan an secret agaent from Cario, working with the KGB, but is this his only employer? Across Europe, England, into the United States and Italy. On the high seas to the middle east. Ken Follett's book will keep you reading. It is loaded with intrigue from start to finish. Learn how agents can get people to co-operate without knowing it. Then, as we think it is all going to go under, the plan by Dickstein seems to be working even though people have died to accomplish his task. What is it that Dickstein was trying so desperate to accomplish? Follett will surprise you with the ending. Another Follett thriller....

If your after an entertaining thriller this delivers this is a fun read! Follett to the uninitiated is a great story teller with a great writing style one of the greats in our time. After reading some of he more popular books I have been cautious to read his other novels. But in truth I have not been disappointed. This certainly delivered on all points. I must say in response to a couple of poor reviews on probability at the end you'd be surprised and history has shown in the past how sometimes things seemed totally unreal like what this story is based on an impossible heist that actually took place. I know for a fact from my background where breaches in security through dismissal of proper threat assessment or procedures due to extenuating circumstances have occurred by highly skilled professionals through arrogance in superiority of their skills. Further, I have seen things as I'm sure at some point other people may have, where they have witnessed something extraordinary or stranger than fiction. So in closing although it may push the envelop it certainly does not detract from the story and delivers one excellent read. Fully recommend worthy of a read!

"Triple" by Ken Follett is another great story from one of the masters of the mystery/thriller genre. His hallmark intensity and remarkable imagination are in full force in this stunning storyline featuring the intrigue, political and personal, normally found in his works. If you enjoy reading tightly wound stories within stories you will love the action packed beautifully written narrative in this globe spanning confrontation between Israel and the Arab World. 4 stars!!!!
