This book is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents either are the product of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events, or locales is entirely coincidental.

I like police stories and those involving suspense and mystery. Am sure that Mitchell Smith willb e getter as he writes more. J. Robert Ewbank author "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the 'Isms'".

This book was like no other I've read in its genre. The plot is totally thriller but the writing is character heavy and with a whole different kind of pacing. You know how, in the standard thriller, just before a violent scene, the author slows down the pacing and starts describing the action in detail? When we have a character slowly climbing the stairs, noticing the dirt in the corner, finally reaching his apartment and then searching his pocket for the key, we know something's waiting for him on the other side of the door. But in Daydreams, all the action is paced this way. Every scene and character and action is fully and deeply imagined. I enjoyed it but if you're looking for a slam-bang thriller, Daydreams is probably not for you.
I've largely outgrown the police/ thriller genre but I ordered this because I so deeply admire the writer. To my mind, he is our most talented unrecognized author. This is an early work and I had the sense of a writer, bursting with the desire to flesh out every situation and character. because he has them so clearly in his mind, but settling for a plot that he hopes will catch on and support more serious work. If you like literary fiction but don't mind it being spiced with a juicy plot, this is for you.

This is a very ambitious detective novel/police procedural. If not for some unnecessary detail and too many little subplots, it could have been great. It doesn't hit its stride until the last 100 or so pages, but then really delivers. One gets the impression that it was intended to be the first book in a series featuring detective Ellie Klein, but there was never a follow-up. I've now read three Mitchell Smith novels. Stone City is the best, with Karma second and Daydreams third.
