The fourth Jeri Howard mystery (Take a Number, Fawcett: Columbine, 1993) takes the Oakland private investigator to Carmel and Monterey Bay, where an intended vacation becomes work. Pelican mutilations, water pollution, sabotage in her mother's restaurant, and a fisherman cousin framed for the murder of his socialite fiancee all vie for Jeri's attention. I'm so happy to have found this series about PI Jeri Howard. Amazon writes, "Fans of female sleuths like Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone will particularly enjoy it, as well as aficionados of Marcia Muller’s fellow Bay Area detective, Sharon McCone." I agree wholeheartedly! This is good writing and solid story-telling, with a main character who is clever and unafraid to go where the clues lead her. Kinsey Millhone will always be my favorite fictional PI but Jeri Howard has shot to #2 on my list. Can't wait to read all the books in this series.

This is a classic story of a man who is abusive toward women especially his wife at the time. It is told with twists and turns that keeps a domestic violence story fresh. The characters are believable. If you like a mystery then this is one you should enjoy.

I loved reading about Jeri Howard. I have read all of Sue Graftons books and this is right up there with them. Jeri is a private investigator on a job to find out where a cheating abusive husband hid all the money so his wifes divorce attorney can't find it. In her search Jeri finds that she has a new awareness and compassion for the homeless that live on the edge of society. "For the grace of God, there go I" she wonders. She tracks down leads and talks to many people in her quest for the answers to her many questions and "I GOT TO TAG ALONG" I even liked some of the characters and understood how and why they were feeling the way they were. I loved Acey and his family. I thoroughly enjoyed this and didn't want it to end, but like all good storys there was a happy ending and her plans to go visit her mother are in her future. Now the bad, it could use a proof reader as there were a few (no more than a dozen) typos, 1 for I, com for corn, not many but I do get distracted easily. All in all it was a very enjoyable read. Go get this book, you will not be sorry!

This book was better than book two. It also has a lot of unnecessary filler which I just skim over. It had me guessing until near the end about who the real killer was. There were lots of suspects; lots of people who could have done it. There was a neat little twist at the end that surprised me. This book, too, had some bad language. I'm reading book four now and it is good.

This was a good story and I had to stay up late for two nights to finish reading it. There was no filth or cursing so it just proves that a book that is well written doesn't need all of that to hold the interest of a reader.

At last a PI not overcome with angst or hidden past. Jeri seems like a well balanced woman who is confident and capable. Really enjoyed Take a Number. Ready to read all the books in the series.

An addictive book. Just a few page o a chapter more. Then I will clean or do laundry or . . .
