Bones Lore: Temperance Brennan. Do you like this video? Temperance: I don't know what that means. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, born Joy Keenan is a forensic anthropologist and works at the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington, . Temperance's character is very loosely based on author Kathy Reichs. Although the character is named after the heroine in Reichs' crime novel series, her characterization was based on Reichs herself rather than the books' protagonist.

It's a summer of sizzling heat in Charlotte where Dr. Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist for the North Carolina medical examiner, looks forward to her first vacation in years. A romantic vacation. She's almost out the door when the bones start appearing. A newborn's charred remains turn up in a woodstove. A small plane crashes in a North Carolina cornfield on a sunny afternoon. Both pilot and passenger are burned beyond recognition. And what is the mysterious black substance covering the bodies? Most puzzling of all are the bones discovered at a remote farm outside Charlotte. The remains seem to be of animal origin, but Tempe is shocked when she gets them to her lab. With help from a special detective friend, Tempe must investigate a poignant and terrifying case that comes at the worst possible moment. Daughter Katy has a new boyfriend who Tempe fears may have something to hide. And important personal decisions face Tempe. Is it time for emotional commitment? Will she have the chance to find out? Everything must wait on the bones. Why are the X rays and DNA so perplexing? Who is trying to keep Tempe from the answers? Someone is following her and Katy. That someone must be stopped before it's too late.

I like Kathy Reichs a lot. Her area of expertise is fascinating and I love reading how Dr. Brennan gets the job done. While I won't rehash the who, what, when, where, and why of this particular book (that can be read elsewhere), I will say that I'm bothered by the immaturity of Dr. B when it comes to her relationship with Ryan. As a writer of romance, I have been told many times that a conflict between characters isn't real if it can be cleared up with one conversation. All Dr. B had to do was ask Ryan a couple of questions or tell him that she is insecure in their relationship. Instead, she is rude, uncommunicative, and just plain silly every time they're together. That ploy is wearing thin. She's smarter than that.

As for the plot, I thought it was excellent, clear, and intriguing. I didn't have the issues with her running into danger unprepared that some other reviewers have. I thought Ms Reich set up Dr. B's obsession with the case pretty well, making her actions justifiable if foolish. I still find myself skimming some of the historical detail and in-depth explanations to get to the good stuff. But over all, I liked this book.

Full disclosure. As I have stated in previous reviews of Kathy Reichs' books I am an unabashed fan. To the point once I started reading the series I discovered that the Temperance Brennen in the books was a far more interesting and multi-faceted character than the one in the "Bones" tv series. Bare Bones did nothing to change my opinion. When you have the author who is a forensic anthropologists, one of the few in the country, that writes on how this impacts the criminal investigation process you have a winner. Plus, she is a wonderful writer. Great Read.

I had just finished reading DEADLY DECISIONS by Kathy Reichs and was looking forward to reading BARE BONES, but it was kind of late at night and I thought: :Well, I can start this tomorrow." then after reading the back cover 5 or 6 times I decided to just start it, read a chapter or two and then get into it for real the next day. The next thing I knew I thought I should go to bed because I had to work the next day and I was on page 183. Holy smokes!!! This is the third book I've read in the Temperance Brennan series and I just ordered 3 more. Every one of these novels move along at a brisk pace. BARE BONES again has Tempe discovering bones where they shouldn't be and begins to unravel a mystery, This one has plenty of plot twists and a few times I thought I had it figured out just to find (as Tempe did too) that I was wrong. Again in this book, Brennan is required to work with a detective that she does not particularly like but again softens her opinion of him by the end of the story, showing that she too can be wrong. Oh yeah, Andrew Ryan is again on hand as the love interst. Another good plot by Reichs makes this an easy one to recommend. Can't wait to start the next one.

Superlative descriptors cannot capture the joy of reading Kathy Reichs . Bare Bones lays bare a world of details without losing the big pictures of wildlife and drug smuggling around the planet and here in our back yards. Every mystery novel since Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson puzzled out the clues to solve the crimes, all my favorite authors have prepared the way for Temperance Brennan. Reichs has found the way to educate me further in major ways. I love her integrative progression and surprise twists, the feeling of being present as an observer at her elbow in the labs and the field. The one word to associate with her literary style is yet to be coined...

I have read her entire Temperance Brennan series and love that they are a fairly quick read as I do not have a lot of spare time. I can get through a book and not have to worry about having to sit it down for a few weeks and not remembering what all happened. Each book left me ready to read the next as this last one did...I cant wait for her to have a new book come out in this series....

I love these books, well written, interesting characters. Ms. Reichs describes scenes in believable word pictures. I've seen my cat or dog do that. Her shortcoming, in my mind, is that she is has a liberal mindset and is clueless on current issues like global warming. She also seems to hold a grudge against Christianity. That said, the book is an excellent read.
