Mercy Gunderson is out of the service where she was a sniper in a covert ops team. She is back home in South Dakota and trying to figure out her next steps. She bartending and knows that isn't what she wants for her future. She also knows that running the ranch she and her sister inherited isn't it.

Mercy has gotten over the hard drinking she did when she first got home but she is still plagued with the nightmares and flashbacks that bring her military service back to her. She is also having a secret affair with the County Sheriff Mason Dawson.

When an old army buddy shows up working for the oil company that wants to lay a pipeline through the area, Mercy is torn between her old memories of the man who literally saved her life and her hatred for the idea of the pipeline. When the buddy is found dead outside the bar where Mercy works, she wants to know who killed him. When Dawson doesn't seem to be investigating, Mercy gets involved by deciding to run for sheriff opposite him.

The story is filled with action, old friends, drug dealing, and conspiracy theories and Mercy trying to make sense of it all. The story also shows a strong love for the South Dakota landscape and lifestyle. This is the second book in the series and I really have to read the first one to find out what I missed.

Mercy is a great character. She is a loner, probably suffering from PTSD, and in the middle of a life crisis. But she is also smart, loyal, and honorable. It was great to get to know her.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Mercy Gunderson series. I truly hope there will be a 4th book. I read a review that stated Mercy is a great female lead like that of Eve Dallas from the J D Robb series. That is truly a huge compliment. Mercy is retired Army w an injury and trying to find her way now back home on the family ranch. Lori Armstrong does loving tribute to our veterans - you will want to write a check to assist our veterans. She's a tough woman not sure how to deal with people because as a sniper in the Army she spent a lot of quiet, alone time. We get to watch this woman stumble through life with the best of intentions. She is vulnerable, truthful and is amazed she is full of love.
Now the question is what is next for Mercy? Stay in the FBI, back to the ranch, something with her soon to be husband in local law enforcement?
This series is a strong female lead that you will root for and yell at (call for backup!!) and maybe shed a tear or two for. Please Lori write another Mercy Gunderson book.

Mercy Gunderson is a true warrior, but through a twist of fate, her Army career has ended. I love this series - as an soldier whose career ended before I wanted it to, I very much identify with Mercy - through her struggles as well as her skills.

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews written for this series! Having read and been blown away by the Julie Collins mysteries (also written by Lori Armstrong), I was eager to try another series from her pen. She did not disappoint. I finished the first Mercy novel in one sitting then ordered "Mercy Kill" and finished that in one night as well. My only complaint is that I have to wait until next year to read the next chapter in Mercy's life.
Lori Armstrong has created another strong, complicated, kick-ass female protagonist in Mercy Gunderson. Mercy is flawed (struggling with alcohol dependency to cope with her PTSD) but this makes her character believably human. She's forced to make dark choices to protect her family and friends at the cost of her personal happiness and perhaps even her sanity. If you enjoy the darker, powerful heroines in urban fantasy (Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, Faith Hunter, Ilona Andrews, etc.) I think you'll love Mercy. Strong writing, vivid descriptions, well fleshed out secondary characters, and a good mystery. You've earned a new fan, Ms. Armstrong!

I enjoyed this second book of three with Mercy Gunderson. It's such an interesting story about a woman in the 21st century including her experiences in the military. Not a warm & fuzzy character, but strong, troubled, and very real. Loved all three books and hope Lori Armstrong will continue Mercy's journey!!!

I have now read 5 novels featuring Mercy Gunderson. I find Mercy refreshing and a bit challenging in terms of traditional women lead characters. She is strong yet a bit broken by her war sniper experiences, so the character development in each book has uncovered a new facet of her personality or psyche. Lori Armstrong has done a great job of creating a non-traditional heroine within a mystery framework. Fun and interesting.

Mercy Gunderson's books are excellently done! Her plots are totally interesting, her subject matter is unique, and her mysteries are truly convoluted and absorbing! Be sure to read these books in order, to get the full impact. I plan to continue to buy them as they come out, they are that good.

This is a five star book. The characters are real. The author touches on Sioux mysticism just enough to make the reader appreciate the tribal wisdom of the Lakota people. The twists and turns keep the reader guessing until all is revealed in the last two chapters. It is 3 A.M. It is way past my bedtime .
