This book was a great way to get into WP7 game programming. I really liked that it covered both XNA and Silverlight gaming. This approach gave me a good deal of information to go off of when comparing the different technologies. I have tried other windows phone game development books too but this one is the best. Knowledge gained can also be used to develope games for Windows PC and XBOX 360. Just keep one thing in mind that one has to be very patient and eager to learn to master art and science of game development.

I've invested in a stack of WP7 books under the theory that if my mission-specific question is not answered in one reference, there is a chance it will be in another. Time after time I find my answers (and more) in Adam's book, so my new rule is to check it first. It is now rare that I need to look elsewhere. In fact the flow and scope is so valuable that I'm now investing the time to read this book in sequence rather than cherry picking the bits I need for the task at hand as I usually do.

Adam explains difficult topics clearly and logically in a writing style that conveys "let me help you" rather than the all too common "look how smart I am". There are no superfluous pages which I find plentiful in other books that are not as well suited to my background, for instance how a `for' loop works. Every line of code is explained, and all his example code works. Starting from scratch, I'm well on my way to writing a Windows Phone 7 game using this superb book.

I'm a Senior (student) programmer with a foundation in C/C++ and experience building multiple game engines from the ground up.

Like most students in my place, I have problems with many books because they pound the same material over and over. Here's an if statement, here are conditions, here's flow control, etc.

This book is a breath of fresh air. Adam does a great job of introducing the new work environment and getting the reader on their feet quickly. Throughout the book, he creates code examples utilizing the features he writes about, which are great for beginners, and can be glossed over easily by a more experienced programmer.

The game engine he provides is very basic and focused. It's an excellent jump start into building your own framework, and even complete enough to build full 2D games. Adam does a great job of explaining each part of the engine in detail. I'm pleased that the focus was on engine architecture rather than syntax.

For the more experienced programmers, Adam also offers some optimizations, performance tips, and explains some details under the hood.

One thing this book doesn't do for beginners is cover basic programming and C#. It's assumed that the reader has some knowledge of C# and at least basic programming experience.

Overall, this book is a great start to Windows Phone programming. It's rare to find a book so suitable for a broad range of skill levels. Kudos.

We bought the book based on other reviews here that said the book strikes the right balance between introductory and technical content, and found that to be absolutely true. Of all the XNA and Windows 7 game books that we bought, this one was the best. My husband is an experienced programmer and I am more of a beginner, but both of us found valuable information in this book. The code samples provided were extremely helpful in helping us to understand the XNA programming model, and the quality of the writing is very good.

This book was a great way to get into WP7 game programming. I really liked that it covered both XNA and Silverlight gaming. This approach gave me a good deal of information to go off of when comparing the different technologies. The code samples from the book's website were also a big help. If you are looking into writing a WP7 game this book is a great place to start.

This book is reminiscent of those old game dev books from the mid to late 90's. Lots of basic knowledge and theory with nothing to show for it, not even best practices. After reading through and actually building apps from 101 Windows Phone 7 Apps, Volume I: Developing Apps 1-50, I knew I wasted my time and money on this one.

Great book! The WP7 SDK is large and evolving. This book will help you get through all of the typical hurdles one would expect to see in a game development book, giving great examples and revealing patterns for developing with Silverlight and XNA for WP7. This book will also guide you with precision through the more tedious aspects as well -- developer registration, deployment to the marketplace, etc.

I was able register my wp7 phone, develop my first game, and deploy it to the marketplace for sale all within one week of getting this book. All this with no hiccups whatsoever thanks to the level of detail laid out in this book going over the typically more difficult aspects of deployment.

I must emphasize the evolving nature of the SDK. This book will serve as a great general reference, but keep in mind you will want to stay hooked in to MSDN to stay up to date with changes -- be it new APIs or deployment policy changes.

I found this book very interesting and detailed. I have tried other windows phone game development
books too but this one is the best. Knowledge gained can also be used to develope games for Windows
PC and XBOX 360. Just keep one thing in mind that one has to be very patient and eager to learn
to master art and science of game development. I also advise to start learning open source 3D modeling tools like Blender.

Enjoy this great book from Adam Dawes.

Great technical books are difficult to find. Getting just the right balance between reference and instruction is challenging. This book strikes that perfect balance. An excellent resource for any WP7 developer. Very well written. The information is focused. Using this book I was able to easily implement my requirements.
