I play in a couple of literary RPGs that focus on Pern and dragon riders. I was looking for a book that could give me informed answers to any questions that I would have about Pern and/or the inhabitants. This book fits the bill perfectly. It has detailed information about EVERYTHING concerning Pern, along with pictures and sketches to boot (not to mention a few recipes for replicating some of the food and drinks common to the Pernese)! I could not have asked for a better book!

Don't get me wrong, I love PERN and have enjoyed all of Anne McCaffrey's dragon books---however, I personally found this book disappointing on many levels. For one thing, if the illustrator read Anne's books, he didn't see the same things I saw when I read the books: The human characters, dragons, plants, alien creatures, holds, and weyrs in this Guide looked nothing like those described. The recipes were silly. The garb depicted was ridiculously cumbersome and uncomfortable looking (like the fancy garb some wear to SCA events). Oh, and the dragons.. They are described in the original books as being more beautiful than runner beasts (horses) with delicate transparent wings, yet in this Guide they are scary looking and ugly like a cross between an overly muscled gargoyle and a bull dog. I don't think anyone would have wanted one of this Guide's fire lizards landing on them. If they looked like they do in this Guide, they would've thought they were dangerous, not beautiful, and the whole dragon-metasynth, Eridani-lab-creation process would never have happened. I am sure the writers enjoyed hanging out with Anne McCaffrey to research this book, but the result is narcissistic and sad. The only high-point in the book is an Anne-written short story about a boy impressing a dragon.

Meh. Kind of a disappointment. Not a single map, you need to buy the Atlas if you want maps. And the wherries, sorry can't get over this dumb thing. In the Dragonflight books, wherries are described as large flightless birds resembling ostriches. In this book, they look and are described as flying predators, like some kind of dead ugly vulture crossed with a dragon. No! This is wrong! And... I've just realized what a dork I am.

Such wonderful descriptions of flora and fauna.

These were unobtanium when I first went looking for them. I'm glad I found it gently used.

I admit to being spoiled by Robin Wood's Illustrations of Pern. The writing was interesting and explanatory of the Pern world of Anne McCaffrey - what badges belong to whom, where things are located, etc, but the illustrations were awkward and missing the believability & charm of "The People of Pern."

I've been wading through the dragonlore for the World of Pern for awhile now - and there is a short story in this book about the dolphins of Pern that I'd learned was there, so I got the book to read that little short story. But I was quite surprised to see the amazingly well developed "history" of the discovery of a habitable planet in a solar system light years from our Earth ... so well graphically depicted that it became believable. At first, I was wondering if the world really exists. The author had me over a stump on that one! Hah! I learned some things about the world of Pern that I hadn't quite apprehended while reading the initial books, even. A much better understanding of what "Thread" really is! Was worth the "price of admission" - and I will be passing it along to my grandson, who is, at the moment, in the throes of a passion for dinosaurs and comic book heroes. I am sure he will love the Dragons of Pern!
