I read this book when it was first published and enjoyed it as much as any of the Witch World books. Howejver, I have found myself drawn to it again recently and have read it three times in the past few months! I love Eleeri, a 1/4 Native American raised by her great grandfather in the traditional ways since the death of her parents. On his death before her 16th birthday, she escapes being delivered into custody of her abusive aunt and uncle by taking the path of the Gone-Before Ones, which takes her to Escore on the Witch World. She befriends a Keplian mare (horse shaped, intelligent creature), finds a home for them in a hidden valley containing ruins and secrets, makes human friends, fights evil, and builds a solid life for herself and her herd of rescued Keplian friends. An excellent book!

All the charm and magic came thru this storytellers words. Magic as in Andre Norton magic, as in using Andre Norton words. The words ARE the magic.

No suspense at all here. Long drawn out, fairly boring lead-in to disappointing climax. Very poor villain characterization; never even see him until the very end, then a cartoonish presentation of ineffectuality.
I gave it three stars only because it's a little better than "Magestone" which got a courtesy two because of Norton's name on the cover. Really only deserves two at most.

I gave this book a rating of five because it was very interesting, I could hardly put it down. I thought I had about all of the Witch World Series books until I got my Kindle & saw on Amazon just how many I didn't have. I'm trying to remedy that situation now. I would recommend this & any book by Andre Norton to any science fiction fan.

I grew up surrounded by Andre Norton. It was my big brother's thing. The day I read the first I have read more than I could ever have thought I would. I loved the story and I loved the characters.

Bliss
The second book in my favorite series in the Witch World Books

I've loved Andre Norton since I was in 7th grade. Her stories are exciting possibilities. Her characters sympathetic.

Andre Norton books are great! I recommend them highly to anyone looking for a great story that's easy to understand.
