This lovely hardcover book, missing jacket, is one of a huge collection of interesting Christian books that belonged to one or all of a grandfather, father and son all of whom were California Presbyterian ministers clear back in to the 19th century, they are all long gone now but their well kept and well read books remain, each with a little or sometimes a lot of relevant writing in the margins and some underlining too. NEVER library, very clean, tight binding. Because these old books all are well kept, no smoking around them ever, we rate them good. The reverends were officials in the church, debated the splits of the mid century and were pastors in Southern California. Leaving name out in respect to family, but you will get it, as the book has his name inside the cover./lh

I adore Paul Tillich (despite his limited views), and I have read this text in print. I saw the Kindle version for an inexpensive price, and thought it would be nice to have a searchable text. The Kindle version, though, is so poorly formatted, I become nauseated due to all the varying fonts sizes. Download a sample before purchasing to see if someone has corrected the format of this text.

The book is choppy, for Tillich. Still, Tillich's knowledge was immense and his take on theological history reads well. The transcribed Union Library lecture notes from which the book derives are better, informal, and include guest lectures from Father Georges Florovsky.

Great read if you want to understand Tillich's theology better and get his take on the history of Christian theology, and its relationship to philosophy. I had read some of Tillich's work previously and it was cool to see the connection between his theology and some of the theologians and philosophers of the past.

Understanding where Christianity comes from sets the stage to question modern Christianity. A Pastor once told me to forget all the modern Christian books and concentrate on what the early Church Fathers said, what the great theologians contributed to what we understand today. A History of Christian Thought begins that process. Understanding what Christianity originally meant is to understand the what Christianity has forgotten. This book has a lot to teach regarding Christianity.
