Van Lommel, Pim. Even a detailed knowledge of the brain’s workings and neural correlates of consciousness may fail to explain how or why human beings have self-aware minds his chapter may not be easy for everyone. But my exploration of the anatomy, function, and imaging techniques of the brain is aimed at improving our understanding of the complexity of the brain while at the same time recognizing how little we still know about brain function and the origins of consciousness.

He studied medicine at Utrecht University, specializing in cardiology. He worked as a cardiologist at the Rijnstate Hospital, Arnhem, for 26 years (1977-2003). In 2001, his large-scaled prospective study to the near-death experiences after cardiac arrest was published in the medical journal The Lancet

In Consciousness Beyond Life, van Lommel shows that our consciousness does not always coincide with brain functions and that, remarkably and significantly, consciousness can even be experienced separate from the body. Categories: Science (general)\Scientific-popular. Can we still speak of consciousness when a person is confirmed dead and the body is cold? I will look more closely at this question below.

Van Lommel provides scientific evidence that the near-death phenomenon is an authentic experience that cannot be attributed to imagination, psychosis, or oxygen deprivation. He further reveals that after such a profound experience, most patients' personalities undergo a permanent change. In Consciousness Beyond Life, van Lommel shows that our consciousness does not always coincide with brain functions and that, remarkably and significantly, consciousness can even be experienced separate from the body.

His book titled, Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of Near-Death Experience, covers his more than 25 years .

Dr. Pim Van Lommel, thanks so much for joining me today on Skeptiko. Dr. Van Lommel: You’re welcome. And they’re so overwhelmed by this experience, as well. You just believe them because they’re so honest. And then you talk to one or two but I’ve talked to hundreds of those patients.

In Consciousness Beyond Life, the internationally renowned cardiologist Dr. Pim van Lommel offers ground-breaking research into whether or not our consciousness survives the death of our body. If you enjoy books about near-death experiences, such as those by Raymond Moody, Jeffrey Long, and James Van Praagh; watch televisions shows like Ghosthunters, Touched by an Angel, and Ghost Whisperer; or are interested in works that explore the intersection of faith and science, such as Spiritual Brain, Signature in the Cell, and When Science Meets Religion; you’ll find much to ponder in Consciousness Beyond Life.

I bought this book to see how the Author approached the subject concerning the subject of NDE. I speak of My own personal history of this topic. I was involved in a near fatal car accident in 2008. My Wife said I was pronouced dead at the scene. She said they had to restart My heart again. What occurred after the accident, ( and before) I have no memory what so ever. I was in a Coma for 2 months. I have very Slight memories from being in the Hospital ICU. I asked My Wife about what I saw when I was still in My Coma. She said much of it was true. I also spoke to My dead Father during that time that I was still in My Coma. He passed in 1973 of cancer, and I was 9 at that time. He was in a tall grassy field He asked Me to come with Him. I said that I ," Did not want to go ". He then turned away and said to Me, " OK Sport " and walked away., It was a very peaceful feeling being there at that time. I have no fear of death anymore.

This is an important book for anyone who is interested to consider the survival of consciousness after death. Dr. Lommel is a credible source, due to his many years experience in a clinical setting. Also, the book is comprehensive and clearly written. It is thoroughly footnoted and exhaustively researched, but the chief attribute of the book is it's accessible writing style and fascinating readability. Pim van Lommel has impeccable credentials in his field and he is also a first-rate storyteller. This is a book that is
literally hard to put down.

People who experience a near death experience (NDE) often feel alone and may encounter negative feedback from their family and friends. This excellent book was written by a cardiologist who has not had an NDE but rather kept hearing about the experiences from patients. He then conducted several studies, well-designed, that convinced him NDEs are absolutely real. If you have questions about what happens when we die, read this book. If you are skeptical about "near death experienced", read this book. Some parts are a bit scientific in language, but the book is very approachable for all people.

The book mainly focuses on the scientific evaluation of a seemingly unscientific phenomena - the near death experiences. Still, it covers a variety of modern researches and theories concerning life and consciousness through NDEs, which makes it at least an interesting, revealing, and thought-provoking reading experience. The writing itself was accessible and thoughtful. Just prepare to be very open-minded. And now I am extremely curious about what science would take us in the future for sure!

I enjoy research so having all his references presented means a layman like me can check it out for myself. I didn't notice any religious babble...just facts and theories. My take on the book is...the mind is not the body so nobody dies. Now what?

I love the way how the author explains how quantum physics begins to throw light on these things. It can't really be fully explained to our mind limited as it is by time and space and bodily identification but... Also we so much appreciate the good work and research of so many including David Bohm. And for myself, I love how much of the ancient wisdom texts (Advaita Vedanta) concord with NDEs and quantum physics.

If you want to really know if this book is for you, go to your local library. If they don't have a copy there is always the option of the Inter-Library Loan procedure (books usually take about 3 weeks to arrive). I almost always preview books from the library before purchasing ... it has saved a lot of disappointment.

The best book I've read in years - and I read all the time. Van Lommel presents astonishing and intensely thought-provoking research in highly readable prose. I'm at page 206 and it gets better all the time. His basic tenet is that the human mind is not created by the brain, and it can not be explained by conventional physics. Human consciousness is vast, non-local and more wonderful than current science believes. This research opens up compassion, mystery and understanding of human life and human death. I'll never forget this book.

This book looks at information cardiologist Pim Van Lommell and others collected over 25 years and paints an amazing portrait- consciousness may very well be non-local (not originating in the brain) and may continue after physical death of the body. This book goes into detail describing some amazing cases, such as a case where a woman who was clinically dead (she was hooked up to an EEG and EKG machine and both were flat) remembers specific details, comments and medical procedures during a time when her brain registered NO brain wave activity. Her descriptions were later verified by nurses and doctors who were in the operating room during the time this woman was- according to modern science- clinically dead and incapable of witnessing anything. Because her heart was deliberately stopped for the procedure, every second she was dead was accounted for and the details she described definitely took place during her "death". The book tackles some common misconceptions about NDEs (such as they are all the result of oxygen deprivation) and debunks the debunkers (such as mentioning that during NDEs, experiencers report heightened visual acuity, heightened senses, increased logical abilities and more and a sense of moving quickly at incredible speeds and hearing music... none of these symptoms are associated with oxygen deprivation). It looks at more than a quarter century of NDE information and discusses why mainstream scientists shun the phenomenon (in short, they are materialists and accepting the data would require a complete paradigm shift and invalidate a lot of commonly held beliefs about the nature of our consciousness and reality), An excellent read for those interested in the possibility that we are more than we appear to be and that consciousness is far more complex than most believe it to be.
