Godwin's book has been adequately summarized in other positive reviews, which I second. Read it the first time several years ago, but came back to it recently and reread it, not a luxury I can usually afford. I was surprised by how much more was there. It is book for meditation on the Wisdom traditions of the planet, not just of the West. And with practical applications that accompany deep insights into history. Succinct but loaded, each chapter a window into a mystery for contemplation. [Chapter 6: "The Power of the Egregore" contains a concept that will blow your mind.] Pun intended, I feel it is worth its weight in gold.

I've haven't finished the book yet but got my money's worth in the first hour of reading. This is beautifully written, very accessible and deliciously illuminating. It is the kind of history of ideas that I find especially valuable in trying to see the big picture. And my mind is always longing to see the big picture. Highly recommended. --- It's a treasure.

Great read! Well written. Put me in touch with esoteric approach to music from all different religions. A very objective commentary to different philosophies, Loved the chapter of Orpheus, the music, Pythagoras his kind of "wisdom" and his clear writing about other "Schools of thought and implementation". I am amazed about the criticism of this delightful book. Buy it, you will not be disappointed!

Godwin is truly one of the best scholars of esotericism. This book is filled with a tremendous amount of knowledge, all of which has been defined precisely and without any redundancy. If you're looking for a book to put you on a greater path toward a better understanding of esotericism then I must say you've found it.

Well-written interesting little book that covers a surprising amount of ground.

Not having read the author before, I suppose I expected more of a history of the Perennial Philosophy {esoteric religion} than its promotion presented in the format of its progression. I am writing a piece myself on its history from a Christian perspective, after 20+ years of involvement in the occult mysteries. His disdain for Yahweh, the God of the Old Testament, shows itself throughout where, for example, on pg. 24 he writes, "Jesus, while acknowledging the Jewish god Yahweh as his heavenly father, treated the Mosaic Law with disdain...." Then on pg. 115 he gives Jacob Boehme's experiences much more respect, "Boehme's discovery of God is also a discovery of himself as a divine being {in which} His God...makes itself known to itself."
Finally, on the last page of his book godwin {typo!} opines one last 'dig' at Jesus' heavenly Father, "That should have made their people conversant with the idea of the Great Architect of the Universe, not to be confused with that meddling "Old Nobodaddy." {quoting Wm. Blake}
Per my readings, a much deeper, detailed and insightful occult history is given in Alexander Hislop's classic {first published in 1853} 'The Two Babylons'. But this work has been of some help in my research.

I would be a happier person if there were more books like The Golden Thread in bookstores. The topic is fascinating; the book itself is a pleasure to read and is often breathtakingly insightful.
