"What Is An Editor: Saxe Commins at Work" is the biography of a well-known editor in the book-publishing trade, written by his widow Dorothy. It's a specialized subject and would appeal to "book people" interested in Saxe Commins' work and associations with a stable of writers that included William Faulkner and Budd Schulberg. The kind of editing skills and interaction with authors that Saxe brought to the literary world are nowhere in evidence today, when novels are marketed like sausages and sold by the pound. For aficionados, this book will remind you of what has been lost.

Saxe Commins was an editor at Random House. He was an editor for many of the greats, such as Eugene O'Neill, Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) and William Faulkner etc. This was book was written by his wife who relied on much of his own writing and notes and also on her own memories of these authors, several who became close friends, particularly William Faulkner and would stay at their house.

Saxe seems not just gifted as an editor, which in itself requires a set of talents, but he served as friend and almost caretaker to them at times.

This book is well written, although at times a little jumpy as one must remember if this is her observations or if it is one of Saxe's long written description but still it is totally engrossing.

If you have any interest in the old days (1920s-1950s) of publishing, of some of america's great authors, etc you'll thoroughly enjoy this book like I have. It's very interesting about the authors and also on the writing and editing process.

If one likes books on editors, would also would highly recommend Bennett Cerf's book At Random: The Reminiscences of Bennett Cerf and the classic Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by A Scott Berg
