I highly recommend David Bratholomae and Anthony Petrosky's anthology for writers, Ways of Reading. As a student in a college level freshman English course, I found this book a wonderful way to broaden my perspective on life through various literary works. The essays challenged me to find several different interpretations. Although my English course focused on a few of these writings, rather than the entire book, I have a good understanding of the content of Ways of Reading through the works that we did read

With carefully honed apparatus that helps students work with the challenging selections, Ways of Reading guides students through the process of developing intellectual skills necessary for college-level academic work by engaging them in conversations with key academic and cultural texts. It also bridges the gap between contemporary critical theory and composition so that instructors can connect their own scholarly work with their teaching.

I've taught my Composition class with this book for the last five years -- this recent edition has some wonderful essays (a few gems from previous editions thankfully remain), but the web portal content is an absolute mess and doesn't add nearly enough value to what's already inside the book.

I had to buy this book for a university required writing class. Some of the essays are really hard while others are easier. It just depends on which essays your professor assigns. Its worth reading some of the essays in the book because some are actually very thought provoking while others are very challenging. Many of the essays can be found online for free, but its nice to have all of the essays combined in one nice and neat copy.

It's ok... Supposed to come with an E-Book, but it's for only books that didn't make the physical cut.

The E-Book website is rather useless, it's only available to us on a physical computer.

I didn't care too much for my composition course, (it was secretly a physiology course) therefore idk what else to say. It's just "ok"

The condition was really used. This book has about 900+ pages so the paper is very thin and cheap. There was annotating (which I find helpful sometimes) and pencil scribblings. Only thing was its fragility. It is paperback but boasts 900+ pages making it very vulnerable to rips.

I was expecting a little more help with my teaching from this. Texts seem kind of dry and completely over my students' heads.

Book was required for a college course. I did not enjoy it but was required and the teacher used it.

This was missing some of the readings we were using in class. In the book it has the name of the essay but it has electronic beside it...meaning you have to view it online some kind of way.

Ordered for my son. He says it is just what he needed.
