This book will be 20 years old in 2016, but even so probably 90% of the book is not only relevant, but very valuable. The author covers every aspect of creating a family history that occurs to me, and she does so thoroughly but without being pedantic or over simplifying. Everything is focused, concise and worth reading. The only downside is that most family historians these days do not produce camera-ready copy for publishers or printers, as is explained in this book, yet is still valuable information since most of the processes still need to be accomplished, only by different means now. Obviously, there is no mention of Blurb or other internet-based self-publishing. The good news is that if you're decently skilled with Word, then in my experience Blurb shouldn't be much of a challenge.

So, despite its age there is still a huge amount of valuable information in this book, so I recommend it highly. Given its relatively low cost, I recommend buying it plus a second book that focuses more on web-based self-publishing.

This is the most helpful book I have read on the subject so far. It has given me a plan for organizing my own family history book, since I don't plan to write about "The descendants of ____ &____." Now I think I've got a good plan for displaying various branches of my father's line and showing where they come from and how they converge and why. There are also some of the usual usage instructions, and style guides that other books have, but I already had many of these. This book is also an easy read, unlike most textbooks.

This book is almost a must have book for anyone wanting to produce a family history in book form. Well researched from someone who is in the know about how to produce historical documents in a meaningful way. Excellent choice.

This book will become an important addition to any good research library.

A surprisingly broad work that has strong, honest opinions about every step in the process of writing and publishing a family history. The author isn't afraid to say something is "awful" and offers lots of down-to-earth genealogical advice.

Lots of useful info....really makes you consider alot of ideas...

I have picked up several valuable tips to help improve the Family History book that I have almost completed. They deal with form more than substance, since I have almost completed the writing. However, they will make the book much more readable and useful to its readers. A very worthwhile investment for anyone contemplating writing a book about their family's history.

Too much has happened with computers since this was published. Hopefully it will be updated, or some one else will write something similar. Topics that could be addressed include using Microsoft Word to produce documents - how to make a report look good, how to footnote / endnote in Word, and tips and tricks. Also address the main Genealogy software in use such as Family Tree Maker.
