This edition has to be similar to the 1978 printing, as the number of pages (453) is identical. Clarissa Tatterson has a number of errors which made it difficult to trace my ancestry past the children of Richard Poling who fought in the revolutionary war (he lived to be 99 and had several sons and grandsons named Charles, who were of similar ages). My great grandfather, John Edgar Poling, was in the book (I was born in 1943). But for anyone who is serious about tracing the Poling family since their arrival in the New World in 1642 (or 1637, as they married into a Dutch family which had already arrived) this book is an invaluable reference. One heads up: the original ancestor, Thomas Poland, was cited as having arrived on the HMS Scorpion. No one I have communicated with has been able to find such a ship in the historical record.

If any one has a copy of this book, I would love to buy it for a reasonable price. My paternal heritage is Poling and I've done all the research I possibly can back to Thomas Poland, but would love to read what Clerissa has written. There are so many gaps in our history! If anyone would be willing to send me a scanned copy, that would be nice, too. The publishers are not producing any more copies of this book, so there is no way for me to purchase it and pass down these stories to my children. :(

People in my family have been using this book as a main source since it came out in 1978. My father exchanged letters with Clerissa & worked out some details which were not correctly entered into the book. We've been told that some Polings were English, some German. Tatterson covers the English Polings.

I have recently began doing research on my various family trees and since my grandmother's maiden name was Poling, I happen to come across this title through out my research and wanted to know about where to get a copy. I have emailed the publishing company to find out if I could possible obtain a copy of this book and they replied that they would notify me if the book came back into print. I would think that anyone who would like to obtain a copy of this book for genealogy research would start emailing the publisher, McClain Printing Co., at [email protected] and hopefully we will get this book back into print.

This is a "must buy" (at the right price) for anyone doing research into the Poling family.

It has over 450 pages and was written in 1978. Some "Poling" researchers say that there may be some minor discrepancies but they love this book and it is a treasure and time saver.

The book has a 64 page index that lists the various individuals referred to within the book. There are almost 25 pages worth of "Polings" in that index.

This book is an essential for anyone researching the history of the Poling family. The book will save a lot of work for the average researcher as Clarissa Tatterson went about as deep and as far as anyone could, reaching back to our Viking forebears and locating historical sites associated with the family in England (Poling Church in Sussex) and NY (the Clausen house, the oldest existing structure in NY; the Polings married into the Dutch Wychoff family, descendents of the clausens who came to America in 1630 something.

This is an impressively in depth piece of research on the Poling family history and lineage. I feel lucky to have a copy.

Really Good book once you arrive in america, but beware on the Viking forebearer part realying on the Wyckoff data should be taken with a huge grain of salt since it was made by Gustav Anjou, noted genealogy forgerer extraordinaire.
