Melting the Stone book.

In the book "Melting the Stone: A Journey Around My Father" by his son Richard Olivier, Richard describes Laurence as being more interested in his work than in his children; he never looked back fondly on his career and would actually become depressed when he did not have a job. His father, a clergyman, decided Laurence would become an actor. 2001: Ranked tenth in the Orange Film Survey of greatest British actors. Ex-son-in-law of actress Eva Moore.

My own journey started long before I left, and was over before I returned. Introduction by Richard Astro. I know exactly where and when it was over. The road became an endless stone ribbon, the hills obstructions, the trees green blurs, the people simply moving figures with heads but no faces. All the food along the way tasted like soup, even the soup. ISBN 978-0-14-018744-1.

Tarquin Olivier, My Father Laurence Olivier (London: Headline Book Publishing, 1992); Richard Olivier, Melting the Stone: A Journey Around My Father (Woodstock, CT: Spring Publications, 1996). The latter is, incidentally, the oddest Olivier biography I have read with a lengthy bibliography including Robert Bly, Alvin Toffler and W. B. Yeats but not a single book by or about Laurence Olivier. 19. A dull publicity photograph is reproduced in Garry O’Connor, Olivier: In Celebration, following p. 12. oogle Scholar.

Melting the Stone is the personal story of the son of the actor and director who was generally regarded as "the best in the world." This book is also the story of thousands of men around world grappling with the Father. It tells of the rending and healing, or melting, of the hardened heart by coming to terms with a father as impossible and important as Sir Lawrence Olivier.
Reviews (2)
Professional reviewers have noted that this is NOT a biography of Sir Laurence Olivier in any shape or form, and I knew that before I bought the book. Fair enough.

Unfortunately, though, this book is about Mr. Olivier's spiritual and career development. Why 'unfortunately'? Because it's enormously self-indulgent. Memoirs are usually - at least to some extent - about oneself. But this book was _oppressively_ focused on Mr. Olivier: in every situation, every event and every scene recounted - even his father's death and funeral. Everyone else, including his family, seemed sketchy, even blurry by contrast. I've read a lot of memoirs, and even the most relentlessly focused steps back every so often to widen the perspective.

Moreover, I've lived in California for nearly 20 years, so I should be used to the jargon of self-help movements, New Age-type spirituality, and the like. And I'm not dismissing the value of those. It's just wise to have a critical mindset. And that's all I'm going to say on that subject.

I tried to finish reading this book, and I couldn't. It needed more context, more back story, more history. If a man needs to confront and dismantle his illusions about his father, then it might be a good idea to say more about the father upon which the illusions were based.

If you are interested in another view of Sir Laurence the father, Richard Olivier's half-brother Tarquin has written a memoir with a more...narrative focus. Go look for it.

I always thought personal memoirs are about the person writing the memoir. So, yeah, If you want to learn about someone other than the author of a memoir, best place is probably a biography about that person. That's the book to review. So, I'm gonna side with James Hillman here, whose Spring Publications brought out this book, because, says Hillman, this is "The finest book I've read on the actual effects of a communal men's work. It tells the rending and healing of the heart by coming to terms with the Father- especially a father as impossible and important
as Sir Laurence Olivier." And, I would say, this book also throws new light on the life of Sir Laurence as well.
