The philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard has been a major influence in the development of 20th-century philosophy, especially existentialism and postmodernism. Kierkegaard was a 19th-century Danish philosopher who has been labeled by many as the "Father of Existentialism", although there are some in the field who express doubt in labeling him an existentialist to begin with. His philosophy also influenced the development of existential psychology.

Originally presented in German as the author's doctoral thesis (UniversitSt Freiburg im Breisgau, 1984), published by de Gruyter Verlag in 1986; the English text is based on the original English typescript (which was translated into German for thesis presentation). King, an American who lived for 16 years outside the United States in protest of the Vietnam War, integrates the disciplines of psychology, literature, and philosophy and draws on his experience of exile to analyze the existential subjectivity behind a writer's work.
