One: like any Fred Astaire book worth its salt, it's full of wonderful production photos. Simpy the best book ever written about the Fred Astaire-Ginger Roges partnership. And because 9 of 10 F&G movies were black-and-white, the decision to stick with a black-and-white format was a wise one (kept the price within reach). What surprised me, however, especially from a dance cri. This book has two real strengths. Arlen Croce, the dance critic for The New Yorker, explores each dance in each of their nine films.

The partnership of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers was extraordinary and won't be seen again, and any fan wanting to know more should explore this book and Hannah Hyam's FABULOUS book, "Fred and Ginger.

Fred and Ginger didn't invent the form, but they elevated it from its struggling infancy into something that didn't much . If you want to get further into this, I hightly recommend Arlene Croce's The Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers Book.

Fred and Ginger didn't invent the form, but they elevated it from its struggling infancy into something that didn't much change for the next 40 or 50 years. Rogers was not a technician. But she left a huge mark on dance.

This book one has the "flip" pictures in the top right and left corners of the book. That is there are a series of incremental pictures that if one flips through at a causal speed, they can see Astaire and Rogers dancing in two different numbers.A nice little touch. The best thing about this book though is how the author approaches her subject matter. She starts off the book giving us a short but well rounded look at both subjects and careers pre-teaming.Like the rest of the book you know here is a person who knows her subject matter inside and out and never writes DOWN to the reader. She writes more like a friend imparting details and essential background material on a subject you both love. After the intro(about 18 pages) we come to the heart of the book, the film by film look at the ten benchmark motion pictures made starring Astaire and Rogers. Each chapter is divided into four areas.First are the detailed production and acting credits.Second comes "The Film",thirdly "The Numbers" and lastly "Production".This is repeated for each chapter/film throughout the book and the details and knowledge she imparts are invaluable to any serious student of this dancing duo.Her prose are definitely not dry by any stretch and she keeps you riveted to the page throughout. This is an essential book for an Astaire/Rogers fan. I've read so many books about them that I can't find the reference, but I'm sure I read that Astaire looked over this book and corrected a few facts. It has the insight of an experienced dance and film reviewer. There's information I haven't seen anywhere else, and insight such as that Roberta is "a key film. . . . Astaire and Rogers become Astaire-Rogers in this film--you can see it happening." In I'll Be Hard to Handle they share "a magical rapport," and become "fixed screen deities." Croce gives a lot of information about what was going on behind the scenes, such as the vehicle they almost cast them in instead of Roberta. I refer often to the book!

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK, ESPECIALLY FOR ROGERS/ASTAIRE FANS. IT CONTAINS BRIEF HISTORIES OF ROGERS/ASTAIRES' CAREERS BEFORE THEY STARTED WORKING TOGETHER.. THEN, CONTINUES TO EXAMINE THE 10 FILMS THAT THEY DID TOGETHER. THE AUTHOR PROVIDES THE READER WITH AN EXCELLENT REVIEW OF ROGERS/ASTAIRE AND OF THEIR FILMS. I AM TRULY PLEASED WITH THIS BOOK.

What a beautiful book! I truly enjoyed the insights of the author and it made watching the movies a much more in-depth experience. The partnership of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers was extraordinary and won't be seen again, and any fan wanting to know more should explore this book and Hannah Hyam's FABULOUS book, "Fred and Ginger." Their complete works together are also available on DVD.

Highly recommended, and a special thanks to the retailer for shipping so quickly.

The quality of the paper was not the best, but still all in all I do like the book. There was a lot on Mr. Astaire's sister with whom I was not familiar as she retired early on...very interesting.

I just got this book a day or so ago, and have not had a chance to read it, but after just skimming through it, I have to say it is thoroughly impressive and a very beautiful book. My copy is an original 1972 hardback edition in great shape with mylar dust cover etc. It was a,library book, so that makes it even more impressive that it's in such great shape after over 40 years! It's a small, compact book with the little flip pictures on each page that make it appear that Fred and Ginger are dancing when you flip the pages, which is a very cool effect!
Really looking forward or reading it cover to cover because I understand this to be the definitive text on the Astaire/Rogers partnership, and I already have a few books on them as a pair and individually...
This book is something to be treasured for sure!

This book lets me feel the atmosphere and the ambience of the 1930's
when Rogers and Astair were so popular. I believe they brought much
happiness to common people struck down by the depression.

No deifying of these two who became idols of the dance. Wouldn't have been so critical if written post mortem. I still love Fred.
