Denis Gifford presents a pictorial cornucopia of famous horror movie posters, stills of classic actors like Karloff, Lugosi and Chaneys Sr. But this is more than just another coffee table book of black and white and colored horror movie photos. Gifford's tongue in cheek text tells a fascinating story of the development of the horror film from its primitive beginnings through 7 decades of silents, screams, silver bullets, radioactive horrors and bloody living color.

Hard cover book, comprehensive overview of the horror movie genre. Dark Dreams . : A Psychological History of the Modern Horror Film from the 1950s to the 21st Century. Fully illustrated with great photographs. Categories: Art\Cinema. Издательство: Book Sales.

I know that Denis Gifford's A HISTORY OF HORROR MOVIES was definitely the first genre movie book I ever received, but it may very well be the first non-fiction book regarding film I ever got as well.

I know that Denis Gifford's A HISTORY OF HORROR MOVIES was definitely the first genre movie book I ever received, but it may very well be the first non-fiction book regarding film I ever got as well. I now have several copies of this book, but if you saw the tattered I received this book when I was a kid; probably around the time I started reading the classic magazine FAMOUS MONSTER OF FILMLAND (an event that not only had a huge impact on my life, but on kids around the world.

This is, literally, a CLASSIC "classic monsters"' book, and one of the best!

Great old horror movie book with a fantastically illustrated dustjacket. Loaded with great pictures and info about famous and lesser known horror movies. Denis Gifford made a fun book.

How wonderful it is that we are able to look up some of these classic books here on Amazon and purchase them at affordable prices? I remember seeing this in a used bookstore when I was a child in the early 80s and while my mother was browsing in the true crime section, I, the young horror fan, was busy flipping the pages of this book, just taking it all in. By then, I was already a horror movie fan, having watched "Dracula" (with Christopher Lee), the films of Peter Cushing, and more. Imagine my delight to see them in this book, but alas, money was scarce back then, and I could not afford the book, even at a used book price.

Fast forward several decades, and all I remembered was the cover of this book and lo and behold, as I was browsing Amazon last week I saw this cover pop up on my page, and here we are. The book is every bit as delightful as I remember it, featuring B&W film stills aplenty and some color ones, including a particularly memorable full page color still of Ingrid Pitt about to claim a victim in the film "The Vampire Lovers" (RIP Ms. Pitt). The film stills alone are worth the purchase price, and boy what memories they resurrected. Recommended for the ardent classic horror buff.

As a child I saw a first edition of this book in a department store. I saved up my allowance until I could afford it. I brought it and I actually still have the well worn and cover lacking tome. When I saw this newer reprint in great condition I had to have it.

Best one-stop shopping resource for horror movies ever. Period. This is the best of the best. There are no others. I cut my fangs on this little gem and as I continue to work on my own horror hosted program, am reviewing it as a primary resource. - Michael A. From the late nineteenth century black and white slide shows of French film maker and sometimes actor Georges Méliès to the Technicolor drive in pictures of the early 1970's, "A Pictorial History Of Horror Movies" is jammed packed with amazing photos of some of the world's most famous and best beloved horror flicks along with rare "lost" silent films and more obscure ones. Denis Gifford presents a pictorial cornucopia of famous horror movie posters, stills of classic actors like Karloff, Lugosi and Chaneys Sr. and Jr in their trademark roles and several of the well known creatures of the atomic age.
But this is more than just another coffee table book of black and white and colored horror movie photos. Gifford's tongue in cheek text tells a fascinating story of the development of the horror film from its primitive beginnings through 7 decades of silents, screams, silver bullets, radioactive horrors and bloody living color.

I've been searching thirty years to replace my original copy and am very pleased to have finally found "A Pictorial History Of Horror Movies" at such a reasonable price.

This old but very valuable work on classic horror movies will delight any fan of the genre. Plenty of film history, lots of clips, and some humor make this a fun read. Slightly weighted toward British films, this book nevertheless provides plenty of information for those interested in American and Continental horror movies.

Bought for BF who had this book given to him as a child and the book was falling apart
This one was in perfect shape ! No rips tears or bent edges. He was so happy to have a replacement of a childhood favorite . Came from England worth the wait reasonable price for older item thank you very pleased !!!
