the content of the book isn't bad (not great, though), but at roughly 50 cents per page (that's after the 25% off, too) it's hardly worth it. text book publishers are the worst sort of con-man, and I'm fairly confident the author would not have priced the book this high themselves. I say go in on a copy with a friend/classmate or two, and then take it to kinkos and have them copy the thing for a fraction of the price of the book.

and while people might critique the author's sense of design (especially the cover, which i like to think was chosen by the publisher back in 2003, and the author should be furious about) it really doesn't matter that much. she's showing the elements of design in an educational medium, they don't need to look good, she just needs to get the point across. and 90% of the visual content from the book is by a variety of other artists, so it's not really even a valid point.

also, the whole last chapter of the book ("Production for Print and Online Graphics") is basically useless as it's mostly outdated information (screen caps from Mac OS 8 are disturbing to see, as that's about 15 years old, and means it predates any of Adobe's CS software), clearly not the author's field of expertise, and some of it's just bad information. If you're not required to buy this book for a class, and are looking to start learning about designing for the web DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. just look online, there's better information, more of it, far more detailed, and is constantly updated (and it's not 120 freakin' dollars). and if it is required for a web design class, you should have a stern talk with your professor.

Well-written textbook; I used it for two semesters of Design Communication classes. Our professor used many of the exercises in the textbook as class projects. Worth keeping as a reference book.

Book is okay, but to call it a textbook is a joke. The information is so basic, everything could be supplemented with online material. Glad I only rented and didn't pay the textbook price.

This book is full of useful information on explaining graphic design, the history, and some concepts. Although this should not be looked at as a beginner's crash course for aspiring graphic designers, this is definitely worth reading as it does explain what graphic design is, the history behind it, some key concepts, and career choices in the design field.

I needed this book for my Visual Communication Class and I love it. It is understandable and informative. I also loved the fast shipment as this was a used book it looks like new.

Lynnak
An introduction, yet helpful in some ways.

The book is in bad condition. Looks like it got wet.
