This volume contains the proceedings of a Symposium held in honor of Emmy Noether's lOOth birthday which was sponsored by the Association for Women in Mathematics, and held at Bryn Mawr College on March 17, 18 and 19, 1982. It was fitting that the Symposium be held at Bryn Mawr, where Noether held her last position.

Emmy Noether in Bryn Mawr: Proceedings of a Symposium Sponsored by the Association for Women in Mathematics in Honor of Emmy Noether’s 100th Birthday. In, Judith D. Sally showed that for J any ideal of a quasi-local ring R, if for some integer q ≥ 1, v(J q ) 1, then either v(J k ) 1 for all positive integers k or J consists of zero divisors. If for some integer q 1, v(J q ) 2, then either v(J k ) 2 for all positive integers k or J consists of zero divisors, where v(J) denotes the minimal number, which may be infinite, of generators of .

THE BEAUTY OF SYMMETRY Emmy Noether had a lasting impact on her colleagues and students, and on the fields of mathematics and physics. Ten years later, Noether was forced out of the job by the Nazi-led government: She was Jewish and was suspected of holding leftist political beliefs. Noether’s joyful mathematical soirees were extinguished. She left for the United States to work at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Less than two years later, she died of complications from surgery - before the importance of her theorem was fully recognized.
