Ever since I entered graduate school, I was against buying text books, but this book was for a 500 level class (read: undergrad), so I knew I'd have to get it if I was going to pass the class. I also wanted to learn more about biotechnology and the book was moderately priced, so I got it. It was so easy to read, and understand, and sometimes I read it just because it was interesting. If you are interested in learning more about biotechnology, then this book is a great place to start!

The Book itself is excellent and is a source text for the subject. It is in the 4th edition. I searched on 4th edition, a list of companies was provided. Bought book with webpage still titled 4th edition. When it arrived at the end of the promised delivery period it was an earlier edition and though not worthless was not what was needed for the class and cost me addtional money and loss of study time. Complete misrepresentation of the product that was delivered.

Amazon mis-directed me to this book, apparently, because why on earth would I want a molecular biotechnology book from 1994???

It's insane. So I sent it back.

Simple
I used this book for one of my favorite classes in college on biotechnology. It will show you the cool side of science and all of the neat things you can do with biology and DNA. The level is low enough to where you only need a minimal background to understand it, basic biology classes and preferably genetics. After completing the book you should be excited about the future of biotech, and you will have some understanding about how it works.

I am currently using this book for a course in Molecular Biotechnology taught through the chemistry department. Although the book covers a wide range of biotechnology fields, from manipulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes through human gene therapy, it does so in a somewhat shallow and repetitive way. I have also seen clearer and more concise diagrams covering similar topics in other biochemistry books, and there is a paucity of in-depth coverage in any particular area. This is not necessarily the authors's fault, however, arising from the plethora of information found in the biotechnology field. If someone wants a broad review of molecular biotechnology, this is a decent book, but if you want to focus on a specific area within biotechnology, look somewhere else.
