My students love the book. His careful choice of primary sources and brilliant use of them in his prose is nothing short of genius. I generally cringe at the wooden writing style of textbooks, and find some philosophy texts particularly deadly. Melchert's text shatters all of my textbook nightmares.

This best-selling introductory text presents philosophy as an ongoing conversation about humankind's deepest and most persistent concerns. The Great Conversation traces the exchange of ideas between history's key philosophers, demonstrating that while constructing an argument or making a claim, one philosopher almost always has others in mind.

The Great Conversation is available in two separate volumes: Volume I covers Hesiod through Descartes (Chapters 1-13); Volume II includes "Moving from Medieval to Modern" (Chapter 12), and coverage of Descartes through Derrida and Quine (Chapters 13-25).

I usually sell or give away textbooks once I've used them for a class, but this one is exceptional. It's a clear, thorough, and deep introduction to Philosophy. Despite not having any academic background in Philosophy, I quickly connected to the material in a powerful and meaningful way. I've been told that Oxford's textbooks can always be trusted, and this textbook only supports that claim.

On a technical side, I love the size of the book, the text, and the layout. It's aesthetic features are as pleasing as the quality of the content.

This textbook was very enjoyable to read. This is the best philosophy textbook that I have ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone who is new to philosophy and anyone who enjoys reading and pursuing wisdom. I liked the Greek mythology, the introduction to each philosopher, and their interpretations. The writer has a great sense of humor. Everything in this book was easy to understand. The questions were fun to answer.

Gentle on the brain, easy to follow. Ideal for undergraduates.

I'm not sure if it's my interest in the subject matter, or the chronological approach, but I actually enjoy reading this textbook, whether I'm at home or I have downtime at work. While I have found individual chapters engrossing in some classes (world history, programming, biology), with this book I will sit down and read a couple of chapters in one sitting (and some of these chapters are fairly long). I rented this for class, but I'm considering purchasing it.

GOg this book for a philosophy class and while I normally don't review textbooks, this one is an exceptional read. If you want a book covering the history and basic tenets of various types of Western Philosophies, this book is for you!

Everything I was looking for in a book on philosophy. Can't complain about the content. However, I bought this used and pages began falling out as I used it. I'm just going to buy another. Cheap enough. Worth it. Maybe I'll gift one of them to a friend.
