The Judge and His Hangman (German: Der Richter und sein Henker) is a 1950 novel by the Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt. It was first published in English in 1954, in a translation by Cyrus Brooks and later in a translation by Therese Pol. A new translation by Joel Agee appeared in 2006, published together with its sequel Suspicion, as The Inspector Bärlach Mysteries, with a foreword by Sven Birkerts.

Start by marking Der Richter und sein Henker as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. My second time with Swiss author Friedrich Durrenmatt after enjoying The Pledge earlier this year. This re-issue from Pushkin Vertigo is a slim offering at 128 pages long, but for my reading tastes the length is a plus. Nov 06, 2017 Ksenia rated it it was amazing.

Will Kommissär Bärlach manage to use the Konjunktiv I in new and surprising ways? Find out on this exciting episode where we analyze chapter 2 of Der Richter Und Sein Henker. Additional Corrections ☆ 20:04 - In modern German, the ß indicates a long "o" sound and ss indicates a short one. However, this book uses some pre-reform spellings which means verschloss is actually pronounced with a short "o", the way I said it the first time. Music by: Bensound: ww. ensound.

We bought this, thinking it was just the original German text.
It isn't. It contains the original text, but it's a training aid, produced in the US. It includes copious footnotes, plus a set of questions at the end of each chapter. Strongly recommended if your objective is to use Dürrenmatt's story in conjunction with a German course.

This is a short story and a thriller, by a master Swiss author. It is geared for college and university students of the German language, with helpful aids, such as a glossary of German words.

We read this in my intermediate German class in college. The book was in great shape, received it well. For anyone who is going to read it though, it was a very difficult read.

Book was described as Used - Good condition No markings in book. Cover has some wear and rubbing at the edges. Binding is tight.

The actual book contained many pages with ink and pencil notes on them. Not true to advertised "No markings in book" description. I prefer honesty. In the future, I will not purchase from this supplier.

whose intelligently structured stories captivate one from the first to the last page. Excellent use of language I love his work.

In many mysteries the all-important clue or guilty party is introduced in the closing pages of the book. No deus ex machina here. The solution is right there from the beginning. Inspector Barlach doesn't have more information than the reader; Barlach is just smarter or, at least, smarter than this reader.

The book is an almost painless way to move from stories written especially for students to works of literature in the original language. Durrenmatt's style is simple, clear, straightforward. The book is not just a Krimi. Durrenmatt uses the mystery genre, as he did in the Versprechen, to explore conflicts between justice and morality.

Also recommended for students looking for works in German is Eigentlich Mochte Frau Blum den Milchmann Kennenlernen by Peter Bichsel. This is a collection of charming, very short stories -- most, no more than two pages long.

As you start to read German, if you have a Kindle, you can make reading German a little easier by changing the Kindle default dictionary to German-English. Move the cursor in front of the word instead of grabbing the Langensheidt.

My German 4 AP class used this book as our second semester reader. It was great. It had an interesting plot, unlike most other texts I've read in a foreign language, and it wasn't too hard, so that with a little help from our teacher, we were able to figure out what was going on. I would highly reccomend this to any upper level German class, or someone who is jut looking for a good German book.
