Bees pollinate thousands of millions of dollars worth of crops. The insects gather nectar liquid from flowers. Honey can be stored, so producers can wait to sell when prices are up. But then prices fall as producers flood the market. That happened last year. As they do this, pollen sticks to the bees. Pollen is the reproductive material of flowers. As a bee travels from plant to plant, so does the pollen. Beekeepers transport their colonies by truck to farms where crops need pollination. Prices fell twenty-two percent after a good production year in two thousand three. Between two and four colonies are needed to pollinate one hectare of most crops. Bees pollinate almost all almond and apple trees.
Beekeeping has changed considerably over the years. Honey bees make no attempt to maintain the temperature in the domicile outside the winter cluster. The temperature within the cluster itself varies. Warmer bees from the inside of the cluster continually change places with the colder bees along the outer edge of the cluster to allow the colder bees to warm up. Another way that honey bees regulate the temperature of their hive is through the use of heater bees, whose job it is to vibrate their abdomens, allowing them to vigorously move their muscles to heat their bodies.
The best books about honeybees and beekeeping, as recommended by beekeeper and memoirist Helen Jukes. Tell us about your fourth book, Jürgen Tautz’s The Buzz About Bees. The blurb says that it destroys the cute notion of bees as anthropomorphic icons of busy self-sacrificing individuals and presents us with the reality of the colony as an integrated and independent being―a ‘superorganism’-with its own, almost eerie, emergent group intelligence.
