Leo Politi's charming picture books are loved from coast to coast. The story is further enriched when Politi complements the book with a colorful array of drawings and the words to two of the songs about the swallows. Overall, The Song of the Swallows reveals that a part of history does indeed exist in the stories that are told. And for Juan, he happened to find it just down the road from where he lived. An Important Story in California History.

Another beautiful book from the author-illustrator of Pedro and Juanita

Another beautiful book from the author-illustrator of Pedro and Juanita. Again there is a great deal of charm and poetic sense of people and nature that text and pictures combine to convey. Each year the bells ring when the swallows come back on St. Joseph's day. This is the story of the year Juan waited and watched for the birds, and prepared a garden to attract them to his rosevines. A simple story, which sensitive, beauty loving children will enjoy

Every Californian needs to read this version of early California history, and Spain's settlement of our state. There are so many foreigners in this state from other states, that Leo Politi's book is a wonderful story to learn from. Also, "Song of the Swallows" should become part of each child's library. It will be appreciated as the child grows to adulthood. A visit to a local Mission is also a wonderful trip for anyone after one reads this book. The Missions are part of 3rd grade curriculum in the state of California. How gentle, lovely and loving this story becomes for even a 4 yr. old.

Charming book with an eye for detail. This book was recommended to me by the nephew of the author and illustrator. I was pleased to read it when it arrived and know my great nephew will enjoy the story, when he receives it for Christmas. He is only three but it should be a nice book to,read aloud. It reflects old California history and culture beautifully.

Nice story for children about the swallows arriving and leaving the Capistrano Mission with excellent drawings.

Love it! It was the perfect Birthday gift.

Wondrous book about the Mission and the Swallows of San Jaun Capistrano.
They use to build their nests in the mission eaves and were a wondrous tourist
attraction when I was little back in the 50s. So glad for this book because the
birds are no longer able to roost in the eaves! At least they have a new place
to nest nearby just not in the eaves of the renovated mission......
