I have read six stories in this book, just finished reading the Three Little Pigs, I will not read anymore from this book, I do not like the retelling of of these classic stories, the moral of the Little Pigs story has been completely left out (it does not pay to be lazy, hard work is rewarded), the other stories are just creepy or quickly become tedious to read aloud. I do not recommend this collection of children's stories.

This book just made me go ahhhhhhh when I opened it. I am a great-grandmother and I want to read these stories to my great-grandchildren that I read or was read too when I was a little girl, so many years ago. Dover Publication sent me this book in exchange for my honest review. I has all the old favorites as "The Three Bears" Red Riding Hood" " Chicken Little", "The Wolf and the Fox" and so many more, 18 stories in all and the illustration done by Frederick Richardson are so pretty, some in color and some in black and white. There is 199 pages in all and the front and back inside covers are a double page picture. I wish I could scan one of the pictures but the book is too large to go in my scanner.
I know you will love this book as much as I do and I can't wait until I can read it to one of my great-grands.
This author and illustrator was born in 1862 in the US and died 1937.

Just like I can't remember all the nursery rhymes I learned as a child, I can't remember all the children's stories I learned, either. Not so much the fairy tales -- I have volumes of those -- but the folk tales and fables. So when I found this book shortly after my son was born, I snatched it up. And I'm not sorry I did.

It is not a huge collection. There are just seventeen tales in the volume. But it is a well-represented collection, with a little bit of everything. And the illustrations are charming in that very turn-of-the-twentieth-century, Art Nouveau, way.

This book is a compilation of various tales we all heard growing up. It is a great book for bedtime reading. My two sons enjoy picking out which stories to read, and then listening intently. The stories are fun to read, and the boys have committed many of the "key" parts of each story to memory.
