By Kurt Rudolf Mirow and Harry Maurer. A Brazilian manufacturer of electrical equipment who suffered from a cartel of foreign firms in his country has joined with an American writer to produce a balanced summary of the history of cartels in oil, uranium, steel, fibers, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and shipping, as well as electrical transformers and other items. They show that the cartel movement is not a thing of the past and are prudently pessimistic about the chances of checking it through international action.

I knew Kurt in Rio when he was researching this book and I was working on my own doctoral research from Yale. I remember his courage in the face of real physical threats to himself and his family as well as the rejection of close friends and colleagues who saw him rocking the boat. It is important for the reader to understand that Kurt could have kept quiet and allowed his company to enjoy the fruits of collusion. A humanitarian who invited black Brazilians to the private yacht club in Rio and was ostracized for his integrity, Kurt was a role model as a human being and a solid researcher. His wife was as courageous as he and as generous to all.

His thesis that a global cartel existed was rejected by most around him and he persisted out of a desire for justice and principle.
