Against Medical Advice is a drama of one family's courage, heartbreak, and sacrifice. Cory Friedman is a normal, healthy preschooler until one day, just before his fifth birthday, he inexplicably develops an irresistible urge to shake his head. Thus begins Cory's thirteen-year odyssey through hell as uncontrollable tics dominate every moment of his life, even to the point of disrupting his sleep.

Against Medical Advice A wonderful book. James Patterson & Hal Friedman Author Biography. Cory is an amazing young man to have endured the pain and suffering that he went though. James Patterson has created more enduring fictional characters than any other novelist writing today with his Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women's Murder Club, Private, NYPD Red, Daniel X, Maximum Ride, and Middle School series. As of January 2016, he has sold over 350 million books worldwide and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most New York Times bestsellers.

Against medical advice (AMA), sometimes known as discharge against medical advice (DAMA), is a term used in health care institutions when a patient leaves a hospital against the advice of their doctor. While leaving before a medically specified endpoint may not promote the patient's health above their other values, there is widespread ethical and legal consensus that competent patients (or their authorized surrogates) are entitled to decline recommended treatment.

I met Hal Friedman in 1975 in New York City, at the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, where we were both writers. Hal and I are honored to bring you Against Medical Advice on Cory’s behalf

I met Hal Friedman in 1975 in New York City, at the J. We never imagined then that more than thirty years later, we would collaborate to write a book about Hal’s son’s heart-wrenching experiences. Hal and I are honored to bring you Against Medical Advice on Cory’s behalf. My hope is that you, too, will be inspired by the courage, heartbreak, sacrifice, and ultimate victory of Cory Friedman and his family, and by the sheer invincibility of the human spirit.

One day when Hal Friedman’s son, Cory, was 5, he developed an irresistible urge to twitch his neck. Patterson's cinematic eye for detail gives this harrowing memoir its drama and suspense as Friedman’s family struggles to support Cory and each other as they go from specialist to specialist seeking medical help. The story often takes Cory’s point of view, and Kevin Collins is comfortable with the contemporary vernacular of a 15-year old. His sinewy voice shifts from bemusement to bitterness, conjuring the mindset of an adolescent beset by overwhelming challenges.

Against Medical Advice book. I couldn't put this book down! James Patterson and Hal Friedman did an amazing job of portraying illness through a child's eyes. Cory became a strong survivor as the story progressed

Against Medical Advice book. Cory became a strong survivor as the story progressed. He is an example to all that no matter what hurdles are put before us, they can be overcome.

Borrowed this from our local library & had to have my own copy. Mostly to lend to others who might benefit, and that is everyone. We all know someone who has a family member who struggles with a mental issue of some kind. Illnesses, syndromes or handicaps of this type are the least understood of medical problems. This book would add insight to any condition of the mind.
This is an amazing story. Amazingly well read in this audio version.

Having a grandson who suffers ADHD is our story. Somehow when I put it in to play, the disc did not pick up at the beginning, but 5-10 minutes in.
Don't know how that happened except Divine Providence perhaps, because it was speaking of an exact set of circumstances that had just occurred in our family. I was astonished.
It continued to be compelling.
I cannot imagine anyone not learning something of huge importance regarding their own humanity by listening to this story of a family who could be any one of us, handling an enormous burden with the dignity, compassion, courage, steadfastness and understanding I would hope God would give me if ever presented with a difficult challenge.

Though there is no mention of God in this story, I see faith all through it. Against Medical Advice suggests going against the grain but also a decisive courageous battle towards healing and well-being. The pain and struggle this young man and his family went through was almost unbearable, even to read. It made their victory all the sweeter.

It is an example that there are no quick fixes in life, but instead that a life well lived is one resembling a race. The terrain twists and turns, is wrought with storms, rocky ground, pot holes, even cliffs. Thirst, hunger, pain, loneliness, and uphill fortitude are all inclusive.

The work, courage, and determination are what are rewarded here. Rewards yield mercy. No luck involved, but something greater... GRACE.
Excellent book.

After my son was diagnosed with TS/OCD/ADHD, I've looked for anything I could find on the subject to help me understand what he is going through and how to provide the best support possible. This family's journey is sometimes hard to read as they did endure some oh so difficult times, but they came through it and their son is doing awesome!! That give's me courage and hope that we too can make it through our difficult times and still come out on top. I wish I could personally tell Mr. Friedman and his family how much I appreciate their courage in putting so much of themselves in this book in order to help others who are also struggling. If you want to read a story of survivable, a story of courage, and something that will in the end lift you up, then read this book! If you have a child, a spouse, a sibling that struggles with neurological issues, you won't be sorry you read this book!

The book was initially disappointing because I was expecting a James Patterson style. After all he is a definite favorite of mine. I felt a little cheated. But the fact is the book was okay and very insightful. I did in fact get caught up in it once I accepted it for what it is. It read more like life is lived--disjointed and not all the questions asked or answered. I often didn't understand how we got to where the book was now and at the end of the book I still had unanswered questions---just like real life! It is a real life account and I felt for the family. What a heart wrenching ordeal. Makes me remember that doctors do call their business a practice not a cure. Each of us has to keep looking until we find our cure while the doctors practice on us.

Could not put the book down. Not only well written but the true story in this book is so explosively powerful. Anyone with medical problems, and even those who are healthy, should read this book. It blows away the idea that only MDs can fix health problems, because this young man went through the wringer, and was so loaded up on different pills, drugs, and treatments by different so called "expert" MDs. It was only when he Against Medical Advice tried a radical treatment that he was healed. Obviously people should consult with their MD for health issues, but this book will open peoples minds to Alternative Healing methods.

This is a must read for caretakers of highly functioning disabled children, especially ADHD with Tourette' s or other mental disorders. This book explains a young man's battle with his disease from early childhood throughout his high school years an all of battles.

If you have a child battling some of these issues, it's a must read. If you know someone like this read this book and pass it on. It'll help you to understand the mental health issues kids today are dealing with.

Happy reading:)

This was one of the most amazing and inspiring stories I've ever read and I love how it was written from the point of view of the author's son and in his voice. Very well written and a super fast read. I've been recommending it to everyone. I even want my kids to read it when they get older. A lot of lessons to learn from this one. In fact it would be an excellent book to require middle school or high schoolers to read in order to learn empathy and not judge someone who is "different" without understanding where that difference comes from.I thank Cory and his family for sharing their story. He's clearly a remarkable human being and his family deserves so much credit for being so supportive but also for making him strong and courageous. Lastly, this story is also a great example of how conventional medicine simply tries to treat the symptoms with drugs rather than treating the underlying source of the symptoms.
