Brotherhood of the Fin: A Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer's Story by Gerald R.

Rescue swimmer is a designation given to rescue specialists, most commonly in the service of the military. Rescue swimmers usually are charged with the rescue, assessment, and rendering of medical aid to persons in distress in the sea, on the land, or in the air. This highly specialized position is extremely challenging.

Coast Guard helicopters arrived at the scene and lowered baskets for the survivors. That ultimately, is the job of the AST-or, you know, the rescue swimmer-to save lives in the harshest conditions imaginable. But the frigid sailors in the water were too numb from the cold to pull themselves into the baskets. Eventually, navy swimmers were called in to help. But it was too late for the majority of them. Even though the choppers had arrived in time to rescue plenty of the men, 31 died. It’s the purpose enshrined in their motto: So others may live. For the sake of future victims as well as the swimmer’s own good, only the most prepared are allowed to do the job.

Former Coast Guard rescue swimmer Gerald R. Hoover presents his own biography in Brotherhood of the Fin: A Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer's Story. Harrowing life-and-death decisions and endurance-testing rescue missions formed a part of his life and his dedication to saving those in desperate need.

Jerry Hoover retired from the Coast Guard in May 2006 with more deployments than any other rescue swimmer in the history of the program. Narrow escapes and heartbreaking life-and-death decisions are a part of every swimmer's life. I loved this book. I had one problem: Gerald starts out talking about an incident that happened in 1983 that changed the Coast Guard. Then Chapter 1 jumps ahead. Chapter 2 comes back to the 1983 incident. I wasn't paying attention to the dates as closely as I should have so I got confused. But once I realized what he had done, I was on track and stayed up way too late to finish the book. I found it to be very readable and easy to understand. It truly made me realize how fabulous our Coast Guard members are.

I am in the middle of reading this and I am amazed at the dedication these individuals have for this job. They are willing to risk all to save you, including seasickness, their limbs and lives to save a person in distress, and they should be applauded for all they do to help. Could have done without the technical details and the one chapter on his famly seemed out of place, but otherwise a good read from a brave person.

I am a Coast Guard Vet (QM2) before Rescue Swimmers. I am we'll aware of the schools and qualification process's for the ship board duties but had no idea about the Rescue Swimmer rate. WOW!
What a contribution they are making. The author tells it as it is. Well done.

Amazing, true stories, of US Coast Guard rescue swimmers / heroes....one whom I've met several times before (Chapter 13). Couldn't put down this book....scary, heroic....very well written. You men & women are a very special "breed" and we (US citizens) can't / don't thank you enough for your service!! These are the details you never see or read about in the news to know what really goes on at the scene of such incidents. Fast read...different story & different heroes in each chapter. Highly recommended!

I wouldn't consider this a great story. This is a glimpse into a man's incredible journey as he does what some of us can only dream about. This is the most nobel calling in all the land and Mr. Hoover tells it with all the passion and detail. A must for any fan of the United States Coast Guard. Easy read with moving chapters and enough detail to put you right in the airframe and make you feel your seeing the rescue unfold in front of you and watch the precision as these brave souls operate through the evolution. Buy it and enjoy!!!!
