development of the theory of unitary representations of arbitrary separable locally compact groups

The principal themes of his work–systems of imprimitivity, induced representations, projective rep-resentations, Borel cohomology, metaplectic representations, and so on, are examined and shown to have been central in the development of the theory of unitary representations of arbitrary separable locally compact groups. It is my aim here to speak about George W. Mackey, discuss some of his ideas and their impact on the mathematics of his time, and its continuing inuence on the themes and concerns of our own era, a generation and more removed from his.

Preface with the theory of unitary group representations. They differ from the Berkeley lectures in being more condensed (eight hours of lectures instead of twelve) and in profiting a bit from new insights gained between 1965 and 1970. While they can be read independently of that book, they do not supersede it. The approach of the earlier book is different and more elementary. The author's rather lengthy article "Harmonic Analysis as the Exploita- tion of Symmetry-An Historical Survey" (to appear in the Rice Institute Studies) supplements the present book in a completely different way than the Chicago lecture notes do.

George Whitelaw Mackey (February 1, 1916 – March 15, 2006) was an American mathematician. The Theory of Unitary Group Representations (Chicago Lectures in Mathematics) University Of Chicago Press (August 1, 1976). Mackey earned his bachelor of arts at Rice University (then the Rice Institute) in 1938 and obtained his P. at Harvard University in 1942 under the direction of Marshall H. Stone. He joined the Harvard University Mathematics Department in 1943, was appointed Landon T. Clay Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Science in 1969 and remained there until he retired in 1985. Mackey initiated a systematic study of unitary representations of general.

I rst became aware of George Mackey forty-ve years ago through his now famous 1955 Chicago lecture notes on group representations and also through his early fundamental work on the du-ality theory of locally convex topological vector spaces Mackey initiated a systematic study of unitary representations of general.
