I found this book to be an excellent introduction and prepared me for more advanced texts.

Great introduction to the major ideas of lattice dynamics, but don't expect to be able to do realistic simluations after reading this book. I found this book to be an excellent introduction and prepared me for more advanced texts.

This is a great text if you need a more advanced treatment of vibrations/phonons in crystalline materials. The author does a great job of walking the reader through the harmonic approximation and its outcomes. The chapter on the dynamical matrix is very clear and informative. I also think the chapter on the effects of anharmonicity is very good. The only thing that I don't like about this book is its not self-contained. The reader will need to have either Kittel or Ashcroft & Mermin on hand to clarify some of the equations. This is because the author uses the sentenced "It can be shown...." which indicates that he is only giving you the final result. I found this at times to be confusing. Additionally some of the variables in the equations are not discussed or described. Just as an opinion, this text would be greatly improved if examples of computer calculations(with code) were included.

I read this book just when I was starting my PhD in Condensed matter physics and it paved the way to more advanced treatments. I returned to it several times during my doctoral years and it constantly refreshed my thoughts on this sometimes abstruse topic with clear explanantions and great diagrams. Thoroughly recommended!

An excellent introduction to lattice dynamics. Most suitable for graduate students and academics with an interest in solid-state physics.

This is a terrific introduction to lattice dynamics. It is highly readable but very substantive. It's a great place to start learning this topic, and for many it may have all that one needs to know about the field.

I totally agree with "MSE fanatic" and "joshua townsend". This is an excellent introduction to lattice dynamics and can be the first book to read in this field. However, I do hope there is at least one complete example on detailed calculations of the phonon dispersion and related properties for a real material using an empirical potential. Reciprocal space should have been discussed in detail to make the book more self-contained. A computer code (like in Matlab) in the appendix would be good. This price is a little too high for a book with less than 300 pages. If such detailed calculations were presented in the book, I would have given it 5 stars. Without that, only 4 stars.
