This book is good. I am using it for my homeschool science curriculum (along with several others in the series). They are well written and the pictures are gorgeous. My only criticism is that I wish they went a little deeper into some of the topics than they do. However, I would still recommend it.

Great info and photos - gave this to a 12 year old boy who wants to be a Marine Biologist.

Part of the Smithsonian "Science 101" book series, this is yet another excellent book. While it is less technical than a textbook, it is not something only a child would be interested in. It is appropriate to introduce a student to the subject, but also is useful for any adult who never took the subject in school and would like a refresher book, or for someone who just wants to learn more about the science of oceans.

The chapters are organized into a linear, easy to read format, but do not have to be read in order, which makes this book nice to pick up and just flip open to read something interesting:

Chapter 1: The Vast Unknown
Chapter 2: The History of Oceans
Chapter 3: Ever-Changing Earth
Chapter 4: The Miraculous Molecule
Chapter 5: The Air Above
Chapter 6: Water On The Move
Supplemental: Ready Reference
Chapter 7: Waves and Tides
Chapter 8: At The Ocean's Edge
Chapter 9: Life Between The Tides
Chapter 10: Life In The Open Sea
Chapter 11: Life In The Deep
Chapter 12: The Future of Oceans: Threats and Solutions

I would highly recommend the entire Smithsonian Science 101 series, including this book.

(The first review shown for this book by Ms. Pabst should be completely disregarded, since her review had absolutely nothing to do with this book, but was complaining about a third-party seller. Reviews are supposed to be about the *product*, not shipping, purchasing, etc.)

Amazon has linked to the wrong Jennifer Hoffman author bio. The author of this book is NOT the Jennifer Hoffman who's a karmic healer and friends with the Archangel Uriel. She's Jennifer Hoffman, PhD, also author of Climate Savvy.
