Holger Kersten's detailed investigative work found that the shroud sample given was not of the original but from a vestment from 1296. As always the Catholic Church remains, not the guardian of the truth, but the preserver of doctrine.

If it were necessary to create or to destroy a relic they would easily do so to preserve what they want their flock to believe. Kudos to the authors for their painstaking investigative work.

Gruber and Kersten assert that Jesus lived the life of a Buddhist and taught Buddhist ideals to his disciples

Gruber and Kersten assert that Jesus lived the life of a Buddhist and taught Buddhist ideals to his disciples. The ideas of the two earlier books were developed and related to the Turin Shroud in Das Jesus-Komplott: die Wahrheit über das Turiner Grabtuch and Jesus starb nicht am Kreuz - Die Botschaft des Turiner Grabtuchs (1998) The Jesus Conspiracy: The Turin Shroud and the Truth About the Resurrection. The Jesus Conspiracy proposes that the Vatican interfered with the 1988 Radiocarbon. 14 dating of the Shroud of Turin to show a medieval date for its origin.

Received book promptly. Story seems okay and very factual. Too bad politics has to get involved in order to get something investigated truthfully and sooner rather than later.

I thoroughly appreciated the research that went into this work. The title of the book put me off reading it for a number of years, but curiosity won out. I found the material to be intellectually stimulating and thought provoking. Whether you agree with the conclusions of not, it is good reading.

Sadaron above the Gods
If you are in any way interested in sindonology, the study of the Shroud of Turin, this well researched and generally well-argued book will tell you all you need to know, and then a bit more !
The premise is that the shroud is real, and moreover contains clues that the person inside was not dead, but living, giving credence to the author's claim that Jesus did not die on the cross, but was somehow spirited away by his friends.
This I find hard to believe as when the Romans executed you, you stayed dead. Moreover the friends/disciples of Jesus in the gospel accounts were completely demoralised (as in the disciples on the way to Emmaus), and terrified they'd be executed too, so I can't see them having the stomach or foresight to try to pull off such a dangerous undertaking.
You would have to totally disregard the four gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke and John's account of what happened after the crucifixion (e.g. the terrified disciples closetted away in a locked room in Jerusalem, the incident where Christ appeared to the ten and Thomas was not there, the later incident where Thomas was there, and was invited to put his hands where the nails had been, the stranger on the way to Emmaus who explained to the two dispirited travellers the events of the past few days in biblical context etc.), to place credence in Kersten's ingenious theory.

For centuries the shroud was the holy relic of the church, exhibited to prove that Jesus existed.

The church was so certain it even let it be subject to scientific testing. But the testing began to reveal that Whoever was wrapped in the shroud was alive and bleeding. The church needed a suitably dead Jesus to bolster its claims for death and resurrection and now they were the one's keen to prove this was a forgery.

In the final testing, the sample released ny the church was delayed.

Holger Kersten has also written Jesus Lived in India: His Unknown Life Before and After the Crucifixion; Elmar Gruber is a scientific adviser for German TV and radio, and has also written The Original Jesus: The Buddhist Sources of Christianity,The Psychic Wars: Parapsychology in Espionage - And Beyond, etc.

They wrote in the Preface to this 1992 book, "As we seek to show in this book, the Shroud is not a fake... The special feature of this unusual image of a crucified man on a cloth is that IT IS THE IMAGE OF A LIVING PERSON! This obviously throws quite a different light on the circumstances under which the cloth was, under Vatican supervision, stamped as a medieval forgery... [the Shroud] means Jesus survived the crucifixion. But what of the 'salvation' which Jesus is supposed to have vicariously obtained for all by his 'death on the cross'?... Only then did the enormous implications of the facts dawn on us." (Pg. ix-x)

They suggest, "Joseph [of Arimathea] and Nicodemus knew that the Crucifixion itself could not be avoided. But if they could manage to take Jesus down from the cross early enough... it would be possible to keep him alive, and he would probably be able to continue his mission unobserved." (Pg. 248) They add, "one may surmise that Jesus was given opium dissolved in some fluid while on the cross." (Pg. 253) They assert, "The Turin cloth was no ordinary shroud... Because it was a healing cloth, for the initiates it was always a proof that Jesus had survived the Crucifixion." (Pg. 268) They argue, "corpses simply do not bleed! In the case of Jesus there are a total of twenty-eight wounds which continued to bleed after his removal from the Cross. This proves that Jesus cannot possibly have been dead when his body was placed in the tomb." (Pg. 294)

They argue that the samples which the laboratories were given for testing were NOT the "the piece of cloth actually removed in Turin... the laboratories were given pieces of the wrong cloth for dating, cloth which did not come from the Turin Shroud!" (Pg. 99-100) Who did this? "the previous scientific analysis of the cloth had undermined the popular idea of Jesus' death... it left hardly any doubt that Jesus survived the Crucifixion. Now it was the Vatican alone which had a very strong motive for withdrawing the Church's most important relic from the public eye." (Pg. 323)"[T]he Vatican stood behind the conspiracy... the Vatican felt it was so desperately urgent to have the Shroud removed from circulation this way... The exchange can only have been done in the sacristy." (Pg. 328-329)

This book adds little or nothing to our knowledge of the Shroud, and will be of most interest to those intrigued by "Da Vinci Code"-type religious "conspiracy theories."
