Rupert Butler (Author). The final point that should be raised is that Butler stays away from any direct quotes of troop numbers, but on the one occassion when he did, he got it terribly wrong. When describing the attack on the Low Countries in May 1940, he claims that 40,000 paratroopers took part (page 58 if you want to check).

Rupert Butler was born in 1933. He is the son of L. Col. Patrick Richard Butler and Rhona Curzon (the daughter of Assheton Nathaniel Curzon). He is an authority on Soviet and Nazi police, secret police and special forces during the 1930s and the Second World War. His many books include Gestapo: The Truth Behind the Evil Legend, which has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, German, and Danish

Hohne did it better, as have others. I read the first third of this book and found nothing new or particularly insightful in it. This is a re-telling of a familar story that's been told more compellingly by others. "Once put down, it is impossible to pick up again," as someone else said.... In one word: mediocre.

I think the Inside Flap copy is for another book. ;)

This book appears to contains no new information or research.

This is not surprising since, if you look at the author's bibliography, the book is based entirely on the works of other authors, all of which are written in English, with perhaps one exception. (In my opinion no credible historian can write a work on any aspect of the Third Reich without a working knowledge of German so that original documents, particularly autobiographies, can be consulted and assayed.)

The author is never too afraid to use colorful adjectives to describe persons and events, although how he has any idea which adjectives to apply to which persons and events is unclear since he is basing his story on secondary and tertiary sources, at best. His personal prejudices are also self-evident throughout the book and repeatedly stated with enthusiam, further diminishing the quality of the work, which at times reads more like an unfinished novella than an historical piece.

It's puzzling that this book, written in the 1970s, is still in print. The reason is probably that the author has somewhat of an engaging writing style, even if what he writes lacks substance. Also in the book's favor is that it does contain several interesting photos, although 19 of the 21 photos in the book were obtained from the British Imperial War Musuem (further showing a lack of originality and initiative by the author).
