The bibliography of George Orwell includes journalism, essays, novels and non-fiction books written by the British writer Eric Blair (1903–1950), either under his own name or, more usually, under his pen name George Orwell. But the really surprising thing was the almost complete lack of religious inscriptions .

But the really surprising thing was the almost complete lack of religious inscriptions on the gravestones, though they all dated from before the revolution. Only once, I think, I saw the 'Pray for the soul of so-and-so' which is usual on Catholic graves. To the Spanish people, at any rate in Catalonia and Aragon, the Church was a racket pure and simple. And possibly Christian belief was replaced to some extent by Anarchism, whose influence is widely spread and which undoubtedly has a religious tinge.

Homage to Catalonia', the novel of George Orwell. Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. PROVERBS XXVI, 5-6. 1. In the Lenin Barracks in Barcelona, the day before I joined the militia, I saw an Italian militiaman standing in front of the officers’ table. Practically everyone wore rough working-class clothes, or blue overalls, or some variant of the militia uniform. All this was queer and moving. There was much in it that I did not understand, in some ways I did not even like it, but I recognized it immediately as a state of affairs worth fighting for.

It's not an exaggeration to say George Orwell books have changed American society as we know it. Born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903, George Orwell has had a substantial impact on both popular culture and the literary world-you know you've made it when people use your last name as an adjective (see: "Orwelllian"). We also have him to thank for words like newspeak, "doublespeak," Big Brother and even "bellyfeel.

George Orwell-novelist, journalist, sometime socialist-actually traded his press pass for a uniform and fought against Franco's Fascists in the Spanish Civil War during 1936 and 1937. He put his politics and his formidable conscience to the toughest tests during those days in the trenches in the Catalan section of Spain.

Ships from and sold by Demand Books. As many have observed, this is a seminal book- the work that launched Orwell not just as a war correspondent of the first rank (ahead of Hemingway and others who played at it), but also as a political observer and critic with a timeless reputation. The book is a bit rough around the edges, but it is keenly observed, clearly written with powerful insights into the military, social and political currents that were either ignored, downplayed or misrepresented, at the time and since.

Book itself is good but the kindle edition formatting is unbelievably bad. Words constantly show up with underscores before and after _like_ _this_. I think those are supposed to be italicized words. Every time there is a single quote mark before a t the t shows up really small for some reason. Also, there are paragraph breaks at seemingly random points, often in the middle of sentences. This was clearly a poorly done machine scan with no copy editing done at all.

This is a classic book is a cure for idealism. It raised my political awareness about the Spanish Civil War and human nature. The tale Orwell has to tell is relentlessly depressing and frequently shocking. Soldiers are rushed into battle with little training and fewer weapons. Idealists take charge and murder innocents on the slightest of pretexts. The weather is terrible, the food worse and despite the optimism of the troops, one feels they know there is little chance of beating Franco.

The text is well written, the images vivid, the characters well drawn. This is enlightening look at one of the darker chapters in history.

With the Spanish/Catalonian secession thing going on, I wanted to get smarter on it. Have heard small glimpses about the Spanish civil war in the context of Franco and WWII (some help from Germany), but I realized I knew absolutely nothing about it. Well, this book is illuminating into what Spain is all about and why it's people are as eclectic as its history. Doesn't hurt that it's a first person account from Mr 1984/Animal Farm himself-pretty cool I think.

If you think US politics are confusing, wait till you try to sort out Spain in the 1930s. Did you know Northern Morocco was part of Spain then? Think you know where Socialists, Fascists and Anarchists are on the political map? You may end up using some of the blank pages to try to map all that out, because it is not that straight forward at all.

Orwell and his wife almost lost their lives there, both from government fascist forces and from socialist/communists. The latter perhaps more guilty of genocide in this case in terms of wiping out the Anarchists and using democratic process as a means to soviet communism. And Franco's Fascism persisted until his death in 1978...

This review is for the "Will Jonson/Dog's Tail Books" sold by Amazon (red cover). This is not a real published book, just some print on demand thing. It looks like it was made by someone who had never seen a book before. There is no front matter, there are no chapter breaks, and the text is ragged right (not justified). It's in a horrible font, and printed on laser paper instead of book paper.

GoodLike
I don't usually read history books. That being said, I did truly enjoy this book. It is Orwell's memoir of the Spanish Civil War--of fighting Franco and of the people he met and fought alongside. It is part memoir, part analysis of the times, the politics, the people and how it all came together to create the conditions that led to the fighting in Spain. Orwell paints vivid pictures of the people, the conditions, and the feelings that led to events. He provides analysis of the events--in memoir as he experienced it and then afterward using hindsight and additional facts to provide a clearer view of the events. Some of the lessons Orwell learned translate well to our own times and politics. It was an interesting and thought-provoking read.

It marked Orwell's Diogenean quest for truth in the political tumult of his time- and as Diogenes, it marked him as a cynic.

What a shame that the author of this work and others such as "Politics and the English Language" should receive such short shrift from the publisher. The book is a short work, but the printer has managed to squeeze it down to the minimum number of pages by using a small, nondescript font, foregoing justification and even page breaks between chapters. There is no foreword, no bibliographic sketch, no index- not even a table of contents. I have seen better deskntop publishing on college term papers. Anyone with a passing knowledge of Microsoft Word might do better. A short foreword by a critic or academic for such an important author seems little enough to ask. Orwell, a magisterial writer of the language is ill served by this effort.

Blackstalker
Had it not been for his experience surviving the Soviet-run purge of other organizations fighting fascism in Spain, I doubt he could have conveyed the sinister aspects of a police state in 1984 nearly as well as he did. But here he describes his own, personal experience of seeing friend "disappeared" as a result of Stalinist, fabricated (yes, I know the two words are redundant) charges of the most ridiculous nature. It is a good thing Orwell never learned much in detail about the reasons for Stalin's purges: monomaniacal paranoia and jealousy of anyone and any organization that gained recognition for spreading non-Soviet forms of egalitarian socialism, as compared to Soviet state consolidation of power to benefit nobody but a hideous group of power-addicted executioners.
