The Klondike Fever book. He lacks the meticulous scholarship of Barbara Tuchman and the gravitas of David McCullough, but Pierre Berton surely knows how to tell a good story. The Klondike Fever is an amazing tale of bravery, perseverance, loyalty, averice, betrayal, greed, and above all folly.

So frenzied was the clash for gold and so scant was information about conditions in the Klondike that the rush for riches became a kind of fabulous madness. It is the most complete and most authentic on the subject in English.

The man in the poling-boat slipped silently down the river, moving swiftly with the stiff current of the gray Yukon, keeping close to the shoreline, where martens darted from the high clay banks and the willows arched low into the water. Beneath him the waters hissed and boiled, as if stirred by some inner fire. Above him thrush and yellow warbler fluttered and caroled. And all around him the blue hills rolled on toward the rim of the world to melt into the haze of the horizon
The klondike gold rush WOW! Absolutely mindblowing. Just got back from Alaska and Yukon. the book did not download on my computer.
The klondike gold rush WOW! Absolutely mindblowing. the obstacles, the lack of preparation, the sickness of gold hunger, the insane gambling, present atwisted picture of poor men seeking funds to save the farm. It is like a spell they entered that changed who they were. A GREAT TESTAMENT TO human determanation and strength of will. wish I had read this years ago. wish this was better taught in school. Pierre B erton was the person who got me interested in Canadian history, he made ir come alive in his tv progRAM.
Klondike Fever is a brick of a book at about 450 pages. If it was in hardcover, I could use it as a weapon. It was also written back in the 1950s. I started reading, already half expecting to find it to be a dry, dull read not worthy of finishing. Berton grew up in the Yukon, and this is his portrait of the gold rush of '98. He paints a magnificent picture of the trip in from Skagway and Dyea, the hazards of the trail and what the gold-seekers found when they got there. ksmyth, October 13, 2005.
For the steamer Portland bore two tons of pure Klondike gold. And immediately, the stampede north to Alaska began.
