But in 2002, writer Riichiro Inagaki and illustrator Yusuke Murata introduced American football to a broader audience through their manga Eyeshield 21″ which has been featured on the very popular Weekly Shonen Jump, has led to several videogames and also a 145-episode anime series which lasted from 2o05-2008.

Eyeshield 21, Vol. 7 book. This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story and the progression. The American team cancels the big game against the Devil Bats. It is the prelude to the match against the American Team – the NASA Aliens from Texas. Only 3 left in stock (more on the way). Book 8 of 33 in the Eyeshield 21 Series. Only 2 left in stock (more on the way).

What does a wimpy kid who's been bullied all his life got to depend on but his own two feet? Sena Kobayakawa is about to start his first year in high school and he's vowed not to get picked on anymore. Unfortunately, the sadistic captain of the football team already has his eye on Sena and his lightning-fast speed. With a wacky cast of characters that includes team captain Hiruma, who has an uncanny resemblance to a demon, and a good-natured front linesman who inexplicably has a head shaped like a chestnut, enjoy all the bone-crushing action and slapstick comedy that manga has to offer. And who knows, maybe you'll get a bit of a heart-warming coming of age story thrown in to boot!

It is rare to find a manga that is interesting to the typical football fan in the USA, but this one caught my eye a few months ago when I was looking for something for my 10 year old son to read. The first volume is captivating indeed and also spawned a TV series that can be found online. Apparently this was a project the NFL helped fund as it tried to drum up interest in the NFL in Japan some years back. There are lots of volumes to buy, but this series has something for everyone.

Warning, the language may be a little harsh for young readers, use discretion.

The characters each have solid depth and the storyline is filled with suspense. The artistry is top notch. The entire series was written for an audience that doesn't know much about football, and much of the story is about the characters' lives and relationships.

Sena, the main character, is a smaller than average high schooler who has developed fantastic speed through running errands (often in fear and subservience) for bigger stronger kids in middle school. Later while running from bullies, Sena is discovered by Hiruma, the quarterback of the 2 man football team in the high school, Sena is "encouraged" to join the team. Soon after, a ragtag group of players is assembled to complete the team, with Sena as the undercover secret weapon, and the team launches into the Tokyo all city tournament.

This, the 3rd volume continues to follow Sena, under the secret moniker "Eyeshield 21" as they attempt to beat the top team in Tokyo in an early round game.

I love this series! I was so happy when it was delivered!
Monta, who enters this volume, is a really funny character, and he always have his moments whether he is funny or serious :D

I think my favorite thing about this one was "Hiruma vs. the Kongo brothers." Well, let's be honest--I like anything that has Hiruma in it. The best devil quarterback ever. :D Anyway, suck on that, Shinryuuji. Agon needs a kick in the teeth and there's no one better to give it to him than Sena Kobayakawa. And I really enjoyed Yukimitsu's debut, especially Ikkyu's reaction to him.

Um, Musashi who? :) I like Panther, he's neat. That's one of the things I like about this series: The people who are the main characters' rivals generally aren't evil or conniving jerks or whatever. They are worthy rivals and you kinda want both to win (even if you like the home team better). :)

More Eyeshield, and we meet Monta! Love the evolution of this team.
