so how the fuck did Gerber get it wrong when they are already seven books about magic school? Well, chiefly because it wasn't that different from it not being at their school. Barry's a tosser, Ermine's a sex starved adultress, and Lon (for the most part) is a dog boy.

Barry Trotter and the Dead Horse (Gollancz). Michael Gerber has been cracking jokes more or less constantly since his days at The Yale Record, America's oldest college humor magazine. Since then, his humor has appeared many places, including The New Yorker, Playboy, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and Saturday Night Live. This is his first book.

Barry Trotter is pretty disreputable and unpleasant. Imagine what he was like as a teenager unless the only thing you loved about the series was the poop jokes, and wanted more of that. This book is a rather funny parody of the Harry Potter series. While some of the language is not appropriate for persons under the age of 17, I found it very enjoyable. I would recommend this bool for anyone who likes Harry Potterand does not want a serious read with adults in mind.

If you love the first two "Barry Trotter" books, do not bother with this one...unless the only thing you loved about the series was the poop jokes, and wanted more of that.

The first two "Barry Trotter" books are among the best comedies I've ever read. This one is by far the worst. How do I loath this book? Let me count the ways...

1.) The cartoony style of humor from the first two books is gone, replaced by a mainstream, gross-out humor. Wanna hear about men washing their hair with dung? Or people eating pig vulvas for desert? No? Then skip this book.

2.) It's hardly a "Barry Trotter" book at all. It doesn't aim to spoof "Harry Potter," and it doesn't focus on its own stars from the first two books. Instead, it revolves almost entirely around Barry and his first girlfriend, an original character named Bea, who is bland and un-funny. I never thought "Barry Trotter" of all things would fall victim to the dreaded Mary Sue, but here it is. If Gerber was trying to deliberately spoof the Mary Sue, he failed, miserably.

3.) When Gerber isn't being disgusting or indulging in his O.C. Bea, his jokes and plot-twists are trite and predictable. Spoiler: Barry's shrink is Lord Valumart! Bet no one saw that coming! With what great villains Henratty and Blumblemore were in the last book, I was very disappointed to be treated to a Valumart cop-out this time.

4.) No new "Harry Potter" spoofs (that were funny). The gold of the last book was that we got to see even more characters from "Harry Potter" given hilarious parody equivalents in the "Barry Trotter" universe. With this book, I was anticipating spoofs of Tonks, Moody, Luna, Rita Skeeter, and other characters that didn't make it into the first two "Barry Trotter" books. Well, the only two new "Potterverse" characters to be introduced were Luna and Moody, and neither was funny. Gerber didn't even bother spoofing those characters; he just made some puns out of their names, and tacked generic personalities onto them.

Michael Gerber, you let me down, major.

Luckily, your first two books were hilarious enough to compensate for this abomination.
