Recent research tells us that one of the keys to student success is self-regulation – the ability to monitor and modify emotions, to focus or shift attention, to control impulses, to tolerate frustration or delay gratification. But can a child’s ability to self-regulate be improved?

Canada’s leading expert on self-regulation, Dr. Stuart Shanker, knows it can and that, as educators, we have an important role to play in helping students’ develop this crucial ability. Distinguished Research Professor at York University and Past President of the Council for Early Child Development, Dr. Shanker leads us through an exploration of the five major domains—what they are, how they work, what they look like in the classroom, and what we can do to help students strengthen in that domain.

Stuart Shanker has provided a comprehensive overview of the 5 domains of self-regulation. There are many programs developing character education, like Leader in Me and other school-wide PBIS programs. Individual teachers are asked to develop classroom management plans, but what is really needed is a comprehensive understanding of the different elements involved in the development of student self-regulation with all administration, faculty, and staff. This would make an excellent book study for school staff and professional development and staff supports are critical.

Very easy to access this book and dip in and out for wisdom.
Particularly relevant for those working with children placed in out of home care.
Shared elements on recent multi-professional training and a forum - well received - provides another lens for supporting children with complex needs. I particularly liked emphasis on adults around the children modelling their own self-regulation and how we need to do a lot of personal development ourselves if we are going to commence or continue to work with this group of children.
