The Cowboy Chuckwagon Cookbook book.

The Cowboy Chuckwagon Cookbook book. Good Eatin' & Plain Talk from the Wide Open Spaces. Details (if other): Cancel. Thanks for telling us about the problem. The Cowboy Chuckwagon Cookbook.

The Cowboy Chuckwagon Cookbook. This combination cookbook and cowboy cook lore book is fascinating. You get the recipes of the "coosies" who ran the chuckwagons on the great cattle drives. THe stories are intriguing. The recipes are interesting. The typeface and color of the typeface is ridiculous. I mean, sepia-colored type. But as far as just a recipe book, it's okay.

From author: forward: I was raised in wide-open-spaces kind of a family. So, naturally, I'm a wide-open-spaces kind of a girl. All my life, I have rubbed elbows with old time cowboys and ranchers as well as young cowhands. In the areas I have lived, I have been surrounded by horses and pick up trucks, rodeos and roundups, dust and sagebrush, simple wisdom and terrific cookin'. As a young "cookie" during a round up with my family, I have seen hired cowboys toast Rocky Mountain Oysters on a stick over the fire, although the cowboy delicacy never appealed much to me. I have sweet memories of this wonderful lifestyle, and in my family tradition, most good memories are combined with food.

I bought this and then immediately regretted it. I was purchasing it for my dad for Christmas. He bought himself a Chuckwagon for his birthday, and had also bought every conceivable accouterment for the wagon. He even bought himself cast-iron Dutch ovens. But he doesn't cook, unless you count a few varieties of barbecue, and since I know he wants to entertain with his wagon, I figured Chuckwagon cookbooks were the way to go. I bought this, then I found one I thought would be better and purchased that one, too. As it turned out, this was his favorite. I'm not sure he'll ever actually cook with it, but at least this one also includes cowboy humor in the form of anecdotes and sayings. So he's got something he can read, even if he still makes my mom cook for the crowds. NOTE: I gave this three stars because, personally, I found it thin and less appealing in terms of recipes, which I think most people will find more important than the humor.

Great book and well written for average person getting into Dutch Oven Cooking. Would buy anything Kelsey Allred writes.

If your someone that feels that whenever you decide to dig in on occasion you want everything that is supposed to be there, still there, you will love this book. Or, if your just someone that longs for the days of the old cowboy and the lonesome prairie, you will love it just for the thoughts it provokes. Happy Trails!!!

I've recently gotten into chuck wagon competitions and I was looking for cook books that talk more about the dutch oven and true chuck wagon cooking...as in over a fire with coals.

All the recipes in this book are written to use in the kitchen with an oven. I was disappointed something with "chuck wagon" in the title didn't even cover using a dutch oven, or cooking over a fire.

The cowboy quotes are neat. The recipes are ok, but have some swanky cowboy titles I guess to dress up the recipe.

I'll be returning this book, it wasn't what I expected.

I am a huge fan of this genre of cooking. I own a lot of these types of cookbooks. But one thing I know better than anything else, is that there isn't a cowboy or chuckwagon driver alive that doesn't know how to cook brisket. So if you're an author, and dare to place the words "Cowboy", & Chuckwagon" in the title of your cookbook (to say nothing of placing them both ), it better have a recipe for Brisket. So whatever this cookbook is, it can't be a 5 star for that reason. However having said that, the 7-year old demands "Biscuits" & you have no yeast. 17 miles to the store where maybe they have it. Page 78 "John's Baking Powder Buscuits". Like I said, I'm a huge fan of the genre.
