Amid sights and smells of the Indian subcontinent explore ships of the East India Company. Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin tales are widely acknowledged to be the greatest series of historical novels ever written. Aubrey is on the defensive, pitting wits and seamanship against an enemy enjoying overwhelming local superiority. Somewhere in the Indian Ocean lies the prize that could make him rich - ships sent by Napoleon to attack the China Fleet. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of their beginning, with Master and Commander, these evocative stories are being re-issued in paperback with smart new livery. This is the fourth book in the series.

Patrick O'Brien does a beautiful job with stunning watercolors. As a naval family, we bought this for our homeschool. Each spread has a full page striking illustration of each great ship, with a facing page write-up and interesting inset picture with facts. The following ships are covered: The Viking Gokstad, Cheng Ho's Treasure Ship, the Nina/Pinta/Santa Maria, the Golden Hind, the Mayflower, Queen Anne's Revenge, the Bounty, the Victory, the Constitution, the Amistad, the Flying Cloud, the Monitor & Virginia, the Maine, the Titanic, the Bismarck, the Nautilus and the Enterprise (CVN-65). The book is listed as ages 6 - 10, and that is probably pretty accurate. I am using it for my advanced 4 and 6 yos this fall as a read aloud, but my 8 and 10 yos will enjoy reading it on their own. For older children, there is not enough detail about any one particular ship to do a report on that ship, but this book serves as an excellent historical overview. At the end, Patrick includes a summary of where the ships are today- a little dated since the book was printed in 2001 - I was uncertain as to the accuracy of this section, I do know CVN-65 is no longer active, so read this part with caution. This delightful book is about 40 pages long.

I purchased this used book as a Christmas present for our children. They do not get a lot at Christmas gifts and their birthdays are a week before for which they also do not get a lot. This book is so interesting it rounded out all their gifts nicely. I give it four stars, because it's such a simple book and as we read on each ship, I wanted more every time the one page description (about a paragraph) of a ship was over. It was even startling that the written text was so limited. Pretty neat book though.

My kindergarten son repeatedly checked this book out of the library so I went looking for a personal copy and was dismayed to find that it was long out of print. This former library copy was in great condition just as advertised! My son was thrilled and so am I!

Didn't know some of these stories, enjoyed this book!

Very nice, but I didn't realize how few pages it really had. They could've made a much bigger book on the subject. I did enjoy it though.

This author is the best at conveying interesting historical information to a younger audience without being overly childish. My 6 year old son read it cover to cover in two days and has reread it many times. I really am hooked on Patrick O'Brien books
