This is more of an American cookbook than an Irish one with recipes for corned beef and sweet and sour brussel sprouts. There are other recipes, such as Colcannon, which likely appear in your other cookbooks with Irish recipes. It's telling that the author an Austrian born, Bavarian trained American. It was interesting though to see the remarkably familiar Nore Salmon Cakes - a recipe almost identical to that served by families with Irish surnames throughout the South, but called "Southern Seafood Patties" or "Southern Salmon Patties. The earlier review was right in stating that this cookbook was primarily good for introducing children to Japanese cuisine. This is not necessarily a negative.

My middle child found it at our local library and was fascinated. She is an extremely picky eater because of a sensory processing disorder. But the simple recipes in the book caught her imagination. They primarily used ingredients she was familiar with, but with additions she could also accept. Because they were simple, she learned to cook them herself, which has led to a live of both cooking and Japanese culture. We especially liked the (sadly, very small) section on one-pot cooking.

This book is an excellent gateway to learning about Japan and it's cuisine. The recipes are simple and quick to prepare, in addition to being child-friendly. I would especially recommend it to teachers and homeschoolers for part of their study of the culture and history of Japan. The reason it gets only 4 stars is that there really could be more recipes and some very traditional flavorings are ignored entirely.

The easy menu ethnic series is designed for younger children to introduce them to worldly cooking. It contains background into the food, land and its people, extensive glossary and a menu divided into the usual sections you see in a cookbook.

The book is only 74 pages and contains no recipes with mirin or sake which means you get some awful non flavoured hybrid cuisine. Also has pages of wasted junk recipes such as boiled rice, boiled cabbage, boiled tea and boiled noodles.
